My girlfriend doesnt mind me smoking or even the fact that I use mj medically now instead of other adhd meds. When she smokes though she has problems. Basically the first time she smoked out of a bong about 3 years ago now she got strep throat the next day. Ever since then she gets really bad cotton mouth....To the point it feels like she cant breathe she says. I was hoping that it was the actual smoking of the mj that was causing these probs. I got a vape and we vaped some sour diesel the other night. She doesnt smoke cigs either, and when she breathed she emptied maybe a 1/3 of a foot by 6 in square bag. Anyway she had it the worse ever...


I was wondering is it possible to be allergic to THC in this way? I would think it would be possible since THC is an irritant of the throat... I dont know though..I guess its no big deal usually she has a glass of wine and I vape now...

Im pretty sure its possible to be allergic to it. This guy I used to work with said he was allergic to it, but he may have just been saying that but its probablly possible.

I have heard anecdotal evidence for this, however it has always come from anti-marijuana people.

A friend of my roommate once claimed he was having an allergic reaction to cannabis when he was over once. The funny thing is, there was no marijuana around, I had vaporized about an hour before he arrived. I am pretty sure he only said that because he is an anti-marijuana dick.

However I am sure it is possible to be allergic to it, I just have never seen any hard evidence for it. THC should normally cause your lungs and respiratory tissues to dilate which allows more air in. I suppose it is possible for it to have the opposite effect in people with a certain genotype.

One of my camp counselors when I was a kid, was severely allergic to MJ.

THC isn't the issue with allergies. Pot is an aromatic herb. I'd suppose, given that, Marijuana allergies are probably somewhat common.

You're unlikely to get strep throat from a histamine reaction- strep throat is bacterial. I'm allergic to cannabis in the sense that, after handling it and touching my skin, I get a histamine reaction. None of the symptoms you describe are associable with anaphylaxis, though. I imagine your spouse is just sensitive to cannabinoids.

If she's worried make sure she takes an antihistamine before smoking (i.e. Benadryl), but, ultimately, it may just not be for her.

You can develop an allergy to almost anything in your environment, including parts of your own body (autoimmune diseases). I have a friend who has an allergy to the metal nickel, of all things. All it takes is an over-stimulation of an immune response that set up antibodies to something that wasn't really a threat.

Marijuana allergies are not uncommon. I developed one myself and quit smoking for a few years. When I tried again, apparently I'd grown out of the allergy.

I used to have the exact same reaction until i realised it was just one of those paranoid marijuana side effects. Do as Hashishi says and tell her to take a Benadryl before smoking so she knows she will not die and then pop some spearmint gum after smoking!

its fact. weather its the pollen or a chemical in it, you bet you can definitely be allergic to it. i knew a girl in high school that was. every time at a party she would not smoke and would actually walk out. she did the same as your girl did, she would cough real bad and get sick. she went to the doctors and thats what they pinned it to.
