| HI, I'm bi-polor and was wondering if there where any common problems or complictions resulting from the use of marijuana. See I'm not a cronic smoker, I smoke about twice a week. Now at that rate will the smoking through me into hypomania or will it make me depressed. Assumming that I don't smoke it when I'm sad and such. Since Marijuana does enourage emotions(happy=happier, sad=sadder). I don't notice a difrence but then again I don't want to notice a diffrence. So I need some outside guidance. Thanks alot David Shirley |

Quite a few of us bipolar (fka manic depresson) folks around here. In fact cannabis is the self medication of choice for bipolars --probably bec/ it can swing those suicidal moods right back around faster than anything else on the market. Can smoking throw you into hypomania? Excellent question. I've personally discovered that the anti-seizure medication I take keeps me from reaching too manic a level and is just as effective when I smoke. Your results may vary of course depending on how stable you are and the effectiveness of your drug regimen. I find having my companion and my trusted friends monitor me is still the best method of knowing if I am approaching a manic level -- its hard to tell when you are getting over the top some times -- and I will self-medicate with my doctor prescribed sedative if necessary, but that occurs infrequently and usually can be traced to a specific trigger. I personally -- and hey I am no doctor, I'm just some poor schmuck who has this mental illness too -- could not imagine going back to the way my life was without medications and that includes cannabis. I don't know where you live but I suggest becoming involved with NAMI National Association for the Mentally Ill. They are leading the way in patient rights and the testing of new medications. They have some good support systems for the entire family as well. Be well... ...and have a cookie ![]() Hugz, Mama Budz | ||

| Just out of curiousity, has bi polar disease been narrowed down to a certain chemical in the brain? Is it treated solely on circumstantial evidence or can a chemical analasys be performed? Just curious as to how far science has come dealing with this problem. |
