| No, lack of sleep is the usual cause....however there are others: There are many contributing factors that make dark circles around the eyes more noticeable. Age -- The skin covering the eyelids thins out as we age. With the skin being thinner the blood vessels underneath become more apparent. Allergies - Although allergies are often the blame for dark circles, anything that causes chronic nasal obstruction can be the culprit. Drinking caffeinated beverages Fatigue or lack of sleep Heredity -- Tendencies such as allergies or thinner eyelids pass on from generation to generation. Overexposure to the sun Menstruation -- since it effects the entire body (ain't women lucky?) Pregnancy -- same reason as above Smoking -- anything that lowers the amount of oxygen in the blood. But this is usally due to chronic cigarette smoking Although there is no one effective treatment for dark circles, there are ways to help alleviate or conceal them. * Drink lots of water (you knew I was going to say this) * Get plenty of rest (obviously) * Apply cold compresses (cool dampened chomile teabags or slices of cool cucumber work great, and you pay through the nose for these treatment if you do it at a spa) * Quit smoking (uh, cigarettes) * Use creams that contain antioxidant vitamins like vitamin C & E (to keep the skin elastic and healthy if you suffer from dryness) To hide circles you can use a concealer -- Choose a color that is one shade lighter than your skin -- I suggest using a liquid concealer rather than a "stick" variety, it is easier on the delicate tissues of the eye. ...and of course have a cookie ![]() Hugz, Mama Budz | |
