MARIJUANA MYTH: YOUR FRIENDS ARE SUBJECTS OF THE GOVERNMENT PROPOGANDA.

The tests that showed that the immune system was effected was actually a test on monkeys which completely engulfed them in smoke for weeks.

Also, people who SMOKE in general will always have more lower/upper respiratory tract infects reguardless of what kind of smoke it is.

That may be the cause of why people think it effects the immune system.

Actually smoking tobacco can effect your muscles due to the nicotine constricting blood vessels, thus decreasing the blood supply to the muscle tissue. Marijuana however dilates blood vessels and does not restrict blood and nutrients from reaching the tissue.

thankyou hauptmann that was somewhat helpful b/c atleast thats one positive thing but muscles are more complicated...if you have the munchies and dont eat than will your body eat carbs stored in muscles thus making them smaller? this is what im more interested in especially how your body, brain, and immune system deal with intoxication and what they all do to extinguish it....

if so, that would make an awesome diet!

but alas, the munchies are really only THC telling your brain that you are hungry, not you running out of food in you.

There is a difference between being hungry and being stoned, your body knows this but when your stoned your mind doesnt. When you get the munchies your eating more out of pleasure than physical hunger/need for food. Thus your body does not eat your muscles when your high.

Actually the most recent information, April of 2003...demonstrate that the immune system is slightly compromised.

This work was done in San Francisco with the HIV+/AIDS community to see if the use of weed was contraindicated in their bodies. Weed was seen to suppress the immune system but not sufficiently to cause people even with HIV/AIDS to discontinue its use.

Certain types of low dose immune system compromise was found to be a highly effective treatment for individuals with certain illnesses in which the body attacks itself -- namely Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Lupus. I can vouch for the fact that it does keep my Lupus symptoms at a liveable level -- hey I can walk most of the time and even run sometimes with my dog, the Poochie. I was NOT able to do that for months at a time 20 years ago when I was not a regular smoker.

The craving for carbohydrates caused by weed is the effect of the THC causing the brain to send out signals of hunger. Carbos (sugars, bread, pasta, chips) are the fastest digested food types we humans eat.

Ignoring munchies -- if you are hungry -- is not a good idea. Low blood sugar can lead to the shakes and even fainting. BUT...I suggest eating some fruit or a bowl of cereal and milk rather than a box of Ho-Hos...

Mama, it's not the most recent research. It's also been contradicted by other research.

Here is some from August of 2003.

Link
Quote:
Researchers found no detectable change in viral levels among patients in any of the three groups. (Rising HIV virus levels in the blood tend to indicate disease progression.) In addition, patients who smoked marijuana increased their CD 4 and CD 8 T lymphocyte cell counts by approximately 20 percent. T-cells are essential disease-fighting white blood cells that defend against infections. The HIV virus targets and destroys these cells.

Lead author Donald Abrams of the University of California at San Francisco called the latter results "intriguing," stating, "At a minimum, it contradicts findings ... suggesting that smoked marijuana suppresses the immune system."
I'm not suggesting that it improves someone's immune system. However, there is no conclusive evidence that cannabis supresses someone's immune system.

I was still looking through the preliminaries I'd uploaded a few months ago. SOURCE: The Journal of the American Medical Association, April 16, 2003 via © 2003 WebMD Inc. All rights reserved.

SO....
The conclusion is NO...no effect on immune system of immunologically effected patients?

Most Excellent....in my best keanu Reeves voice...

I'm still waiting on the findings out of Hebrew University on the effects on RA and Lupus .... glad I have folks who read Hebrew around me who can snag the stuff before it is translated to the American press. Since this is where my personal interests are I do have a personal bias for this information

I've heard it can affect the immune system both ways.. positively and negatively. There are so many contradicting studies on this topic... I suggest some people post links to the various studies.. if you happen to know some.
