I was planning on going to LA for a month or so to stay with my cousin, and of course it would be nice to stay medicated for that month... but... as best as i can tell you have to have a valid california id to get a doc recommendation and go to a dispensary. is that true? If so, how hard, or what do you have to do to get a valid california id? That might sound like a dumb question, but in my state all you have to do is go to the DMV with any valid id, and a piece of paper with your "new address" on it and you can get a non-drivers id. Any help on the possibilities of this, or how to do this would be appreciated.

That's actually not a bad plan if you can really fake your address and get a ID that says you're a CA resident...but I'm no expert on this. I heard CA is pretty relaxed about giving MMJ licenses if you go to the "right" doctor.

It might not seem like a bad idea but it really is. When people do that it hurts the cause for the medical marijuana users. The people that need it for the medical reasons are lucky to have the legal access to it and not get charged for possession of marijuana. When people get the cards from a doctor when they don't need it that just helps the DEA argue their cases that there are people getting marijuana from these places that don't have medical problems.

There is lots of marijuana in California that you really don't need to go through the trouble of getting a medical marijuana card to get pot. As long as you stay out of trouble and don't smoke in the open you don't really need to worry about getting caught with pot. You also don't need to go to a medical marijuana supply store to get the marijuana.

As King Cola said if you do this you are abusing the system and potentially jeopardizing the system for those that do have a legitimate medical need.

However, I'm sure if you went to the correct doctor and were willing to pay the doctor's fee he/she would provide you with a MM card.

I'm not trying to abuse any system, I was in a motorcycle wreck 2 years ago and severly messed up my back and right thumb, and I've been on perscription drugs for anxiety attacks for over 5 years, so I smoke for pain and anxiety relife. I understand where your coming from, but I feel I meet the standards of qualifying to be a mmj paitent. I just am not sure of the requirements in CA to be considered a resident, or how long you have to be there to get a valid id.

To apply for an ID card you will need to do the following:

• Visit a DMV office (make an Appointment(s) for faster service)
• Complete application form DL 44 (An original DL 44 form must be submitted. Copies will not be accepted.)
• Give a thumb print
• Have your picture taken
• Provide your social security number. It will be verified with the Social Security Administration while you are in the office.
• Verify your birth date and legal presence (you may use your California driver license)
• Pay the application fee. (No fee for a senior citizen ID card.)

Check your address before you leave DMV and tell the DMV representative if your address is incorrect. Your new ID will be mailed to you within 60 days. If you have not received your ID after 60 days, call 1-800-777-0133 to check the status. Have your receipt and/or old ID card with you to provide information when requested

Most of the docs who can give you the scrip will want a referral from your reg doc, but I don't know if this is tru of all of them. You might just be able to brin copies of your med records... Make some calls and get everything prepared and it should be pretty easy for you. Sounds like you more than meet the requirements! Best of luck to you, and take care!

And notice that 60 days... It USUALLY doesn't take more than 30 in my exp. but it will take at least 30 to get the Photo ID, and if you have a valid out of state picture ID, you MIGHT get lucky enough to get by with the temp ID, but I wouldn't count on it... PLan ahead!

EDIT: Misread the post.
Getting a valid ID for CA means you have to be a resident. You won't be able to get one that fast without proof of residence, which you won't have. Get your cousin to buy some weed before you get there.

That's a good point Rookie. I was thinking all he would have to do was have some official looking mail with his name on it, but they want a power or phone bill to prove you live here. There might still be a way around it, but I can't think of one.

Step 4:If they can get medical marijuana, pay them for it. If not, start connecting with locals.
Step 5:Smoke with new friend.
