Default A marijuana death in the Midwest in the late 1970's?

Somebody on another site has asserted
Quote:
There was one known fatality from cannibus abuse.

Some fellow years ago, from Indiana, if I remember right.

He locked himself in his room with several pounds of low grade Midwestern weed. Brewed it up in tea (I think). And drank enough to OD. Although I suppose it is entirely possible he overdosed on H2O.

The marijuana overdose was not an urban legend. I remember reading about it in the newspaper some time in the 1970's.

I am not certain it was Indiana, pretty sure it was somewhere in the Midwest.

As I recall the account stated he injested an incredible amount. Many pounds in a short period of time. It might not have been tea, it could have been a crude hash oil.
I was in Indiana in the 1970's. I remember fervent reefer madness but not this story.

One would assume that if it were true we'd have heard of it repeatedly: prohibitionists would have run it into the ground..

I know a lot of people remember the recent UK claim of the man who smoked himself to death in 11 years and that story is dead already: not even John Walters has commented on that - and THAT is bad.

I do not think it is true and it smacks of urbal legend to me.

So I thought I would toss the question out here to see if anybody had heard of this.

There hasn't been a single death recorded as a result of fatal THC poisoning.

The acute toxicity of cannabis, and cannabinoids generally, is very low. There are no cases of fatal cannabis poisoning in the human medical literature. Animal studies indicate that the dose of THC required to produce 50% mortality in rodents is extremely high by comparison with other pharmaceutical and recreational drugs. The lethal dose also increases as one moves up the phylogenetic tree, suggesting that the lethal dose in humans could not be achieved by smoking or swallowing cannabis.

In regards to the water overdose, an Army trainee accidentally drank too much water in order to urinate for a drug test, and they died as a result.

I do hate to disagree with the man but I am sure we would have known by now.

Reefer Legend I suppose....

I suppose we can add water to the list of things more dangerious than pot.

Ingested water is much more dangerous than cannabis from a fatality standpoint. Many folks have died from excessive water intake. It messes up electrolytic balance, causes electrical "misfires" in the body, and usually causes death from organ failure. Most often this happens in mentally ill persons who feel a compulsion to drink water, but it also rarely occurs accidentally in sports/heavy excercise conditions.

Time to drain the lakes and make it illegal I guess. No wait, the US makes lots of tax dollars on bottled water sales, so I guess its going to stay legal.

I have read two estimates about THC overdoses.

The first estimate was that if you smoked 900 joints a row, you would have a 50% chance of dying.

The other said you would have to smoke a pound in fifteeen minutes to die.

Either way, I think you would pass out before you even came close to an overdose.

Edit
My friend recently said that someone died from an overdose of weed because he ate two pounds.

First I asked him where he heard it. He said it was in an article that someone he knew read.
Second I asked him why and how could someone do that? He had no response.
I'm sure that it was b.s. because if it had really happened the media would have been all over it, and also because my friend has a lot of false infromation concerning marijuana.
Another example of how those overdose stories get started.

One day some crazy prohibitionist will beat someone to death with a brick of marijuana just so they can have one death directly linked to weed.

Exclamation impossible...

all of you need to read "Reefer Maddness" by Eric Schlosser (no, its not in anyway related to the movie from way back when) first 1/3 of the book is filled with tons of interesting/informative facts about marijuana...in regards to this issue Schlosser refers to scientific research that a person would have to smoke one hundred pounds of marijuana a minute — for 15 consecutive minutes — to die of an overdose....i dont know about anyone else...but that sounds not just damn hard to do...but impossible...640 grams a second for fifteen minutes (let alone one second), tell me a way to do it supply some funds, get me to amsterdam (don't want to break any laws, that would be unthinkable) and i'll proudly volunteer to be the first person to smoke themselves to death...but that wont happen, so i wont have to worry
