| Hey, I am new to this board... I just registered since I had some question regarding the subject... I considered myself a heavy smoker since I smoked about 3.5 grams a day every day with no exceptions since I was about 15 years old. I am now 25. I stopped smoking cold turkey EXACTLY 1 month ago thinking it was time for me to stop since i've been having a little trouble with my short term memory and I was also noticing a lack of motivation in everything I did when I smoked. The most important change that i've noticed since I stopped smoking is my DREAMS! I have been dreaming like CRAZY... I use to remember my dreams a little and they were ok dreams.. but now.. it's completly nuts... I wake up EVERY single nights with some crazy nightmares and they always feel so real that it gives me a hard time to go back to sleeping... Two of my friends that stopped told me the same thing except they say it came back to normal after a few weeks... As anyone been thru this? |

| JON833.... I have not smoked bud in the past week and started dreaming alot the past few days. Don't know what this type of dream is called but I have had a couple of instances of believing that I am awake but seeing things. Dreamt I saw somebody entering my apartment(apartment was dark) and I woke up yelling. Dreamt I saw a mouse near bed(just outline of ..again dark) . Dreamt I was standing at front door of friends house. Door was open. House was dark. But I thought I saw somebody moving in the house and I yelled out at them...then I awoke. Dreams feel like they have been long and vivid and detailed. My friend told me that dreams returned upon cessation of bud. If dreams are disturbing I would suggest sleeping with more light in room to avoid that very unpleasant sleep paralysis and unknown intruder present feeling. the three instances I described were just before awakening. Other dream content not unusual but have sense of never reaching conclusion. The situation just went on and on throughout dream. |

| It's been almost 2 months that I have stopped completly and I am still getting those crazy dreams... but it's not as intense as it was the first few weeks I had stopped. One thing I noticed is that I ALWAYS remember my dreams now... I use to never remember them or not even try to remember them... Like today, I woke up 3 hours ago and I can still tell you what I was dreaming about before I woke up.. It really sucks when it's nightmares tho.. other then that I dont mind at all ... About leaving the light on.. I always sleep with the T.V on but I put it on "sleep" mode so it closes after 30 mins.. Also I find I sleep better if there is noise in the room so I always sleep with a fan... I hate it when it's completely silent in the room. |

| Yeah, a lot of research places have sleep study programs, where if you have a sleeping disorder, they'll study it and monitor all kinds of things to see what the problem is.

| If your doctor suspects that you have a sleeping disorder he'll set you up for a sleep study. You go to the hospital or clinic in the evening, they wire you up to an electroencephalograph and you go to bed in a private room. They monitor your brainwaves and observe you via infrared and microphone all night long. They get a good picture of how you sleep and what, if any, problems you might be having. If they suspect narcolepsy, in addition to the overnight thing they'll put you back to bed after breakfast and see if and how long it takes you fall back to sleep. Narcoleptics can fall asleep in a minute or two. People without that disorder won't fall asleep at all or take around 20 minutes to do so.

| I've heard that it's normal to experience intense dreams after quitting marijuana. This is consistent with my own experiences, though I don't smoke as much as you used to. Nicotine can also intensify dreams. If you smoke cigarettes, it may be contributing. |

| Grillmeats, did you mean that you went for a sleep study to diagnose sleep apnea, and that you "weren't sleeping" because you were awakening dozens of times nightly due to apneic episodes? Just curious if you don't mind. Just to relate, when I stop smoking for about one to two weeks I will sometime have dreams in which I smoke and actually get high in the dream. The mind is a wonderful thing indeed... ![]() |
