| Today during the daily waste of an hour of my life the man calls health class, we got our health books. We had been learning about "Social Health" and the teenage mind (why the stereotypical teenager acts like it does), but today we started in on saying no to drugs. I skiped ahead to the chapter on Marijuana before he got there so I could copy down some of the "info". These are some of the highlights : - Destroys brain cells - Causes the brain to age prematurely - Impairs long term development - It IS addictive - Depresses the Immune System - Contains Benzopyrene, a well known carcinegen(sp?) I know that nobody has ever died of Marijuana or cancer caused from Marijuana and I could come up with responses on my own but I'd like to see what yall would say. So, I made this thread so that yall could help me with some responses to the bull**** he spews from his mouth every day . Thanks

| Addictive? Only psychologically. And only as much as, say, caffeine. |

| You gottaa tell your teacher that the information in that book is outdated. There is no longer any proof that marijuana kills brain cells. The study that concluded this was debunked years ago. This study involved a ignorant scientist and a bunch of monkeys. The silly so called scientist deprived the monkeys of oxygen for 5 minute intervals, giving them nothing but marijuana smoke. He was tring to give them enough marijuana to see what a lifetime of smoking would do to the brain. No oxygen=brain damage. Period |

| You should also mention that the NIDA(National institute for Drug Abuse) and DEA control all the research on marijuana in the USA. So the studies are all one sided. I would tell him, If you teachers are going to stand there and lie to us, I would rather be sitting outside on strike. |

Here's what you should do. Print out the counter-arguments for the "facts" they tell you about cannabis, you can find them using Google, the discussion board here, or the Myths section. Show them to your teacher and ask the teacher to demonstrate which one is correct, and tell your teacher not to dodge the question either Oh, if you need any help debunking the BS they spew at you, PM me...

| Well, no oxygen=brain damage is that right? When I smoke weed I swallow the smoke and hold it there for a few seconds, I was thought that way(they say that''s the only way you can get high, you gotta hold it) , anyway, so I'm holding the smoke inside me without breathing, that's harming my brain isn't it? I mean...I'm not breathing! :S |

| Maybe you hold the smoke in, but it won't get you any higher. That's a myth. When I hit a joint, I inhale normally, and exhale normally, just like every other breath. |

one: when the THC is burmed it obviously goes into the smoke, the longer you hold in the smoke the more absorbstion of the things in the smoke that make you high, its not very complicated you will get higher if you hold it in longer, its not like you just automaticly absorb all the high causing chemicals at once so Higer Logic, im gonna have to disagree with you | |

| marijuana only impairs long term development if you start too early and do it too much. and thinks like short term memory get better when you quit, ive done it and the only time i feel stupid is after i drink a lot. as to the immune system, there are actually cannabinoid (CB2) receptors in your immune system, but no one is sure of what they do and what they do differently when you smoke weed, if anything at all. some scientists suggests that maybe this is a key to making weed more of a medicine than a recreational drug if they could make a synthetic version of thc that binds more to the CB2 receptors than the CB1 receptors (the ones in your head). this synthetic thc could, theoretically, not get you high but help your body. maybe if the govt would allow more real research on weed, this could be explored further and the immune system issue settled. i think the 'addiction' factor has already been more than disproven, more of a psychological addiction if anything (and caffeine is actually physically addictive, as well as very psychologically addictive). and to the carcinogens, it contains no more carbon monoxide and tars than tobacco. but it is different from tobacco smoke in two main ways: 1. because it drains the ground it is grown on, tobacco is fertilized with fertilizers that have a radioactive isotope of lead in them (Pb-210 i think), this radioactive stuff is part of the cigarette smoke. ive never heard of anyone using such a fertilizer for weed, so that risk is gone. 2. weed smoke is a bronchiodialator, so it opens up your lungs a bit. this helps asmatics (sp?), but also helps the regular lung get rid of some of that waste that accumulates down there. nicotine actually tightens up your lungs. people who smoke cigarettes and weed have been shown to live 7-10 years longer than people who only smoke cigarettes because the weed helps their lungs clean out a bit. ive also read somewhere a long time ago that tobacco smoke tars are more sticky to your lungs than weed tars. if i had only known all of this when i was in health class, i would have given my teacher a beating during this lesson. i didnt smoke back then and didnt really check up on what anyone told me about it until about a year later, before i started smoking actually. so i had no idea how much bs they were telling me until later, makes me mad. |
