| Here is what I found regarding cannabis and these ailments. Cannabis is widely known for its anti-inflammatory abilities, as well as its ability to reduce pain, spasms, etc. It is best used via a vaporizer, eaten, or in the form of a topical cream. The only complications I might see would be with the personality disorder (DBT, BDP). You can find recipes for making topical creams and tinctures here: http://www.marijuana.com/420/showthread.php?t=31496 She should probably eat it, if anything, rather than try and smoke it. Cremes would also work really well when trying to reduce pain in specific parts like joints and so on. Hope this helps. Fibromyalgia "As far as Fibromyalgia is concerned, no specific clinical data exists on cannabis' ability to combat the symptoms of the condition. However, some patients report anecdotally that the drug benefits them. In Iowa, USA, a court judge has allowed a Fibromyalgia patient to use cannabis while on probation to effectively treat his chronic pain. It does seem likely that cannabis alleviates some symptoms of Fibromyalgia. Cannabis' potential as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory have been documented by the Institute of Medicine, National Institute of Health, and others." Diabetes The medical literature has very few citations in regard to any direct effect of cannabis on blood sugar levels. These citations are sometimes contradictory. Despite the lack of research, a large body of anecdotal evidence is building amongst diabetic sufferers that medical cannabis may help stabilize blood sugar. One suggested method that may be responsible is the reduction in catecholamines and/or stress related hormones (glucocorticoids) that is caused by cannabis. Many cannabinoids act primarily to inhibit prostaglandins and COX-2, while providing powerful anti-oxidant properties to salvage free radicals, and inhibit macrophage and TNF. All of this means that cannabis is an excellent anti-inflammatory that lacks the side effects of steroids (which diabetics have to avoid), the NSAIDS, and the COX-2 inhibitors like Vioxx. This anti-inflammatory action may help quell some of the arterial inflammation common in diabetes. Cannabis is also neuroprotective. It is believed that much of neuropathy comes from the inflammation of nerves caused by glycoproteins in the blood that deposit in peripheral tissues and trigger an immune response. Cannabis helps protect the nerve covering (myelin sheath) from inflammatory attack. Cannabis also lessens the pain of neuropathy by activating receptors in the body and brain. Some components of cannabis (perhaps cannibidiol) act as anti-spasmodic agents similar to the far more toxic anti-convulsants like Neurontin. This action of cannabis helps relieve diabetic muscle cramps and GI upset. Two other major actions of cannabis can benefit the diabetic. The first is helping to keep blood vessels open and improving circulation. Cannabis is a vasodilator and works well to improve blood flow. The second action is how cannabis can reduce blood pressure over time. While cannabis is not generally thought to be an anti-hypertensive and is no replacement for ACE inhibitors, it does contribute to lower blood pressure which is vital in diabetes management. Finally, cannabis used in food products not only provides long lasting blood levels of key cannabinoids but, in addition, cannabis butter and oil substitute triple bonded fatty acids for the saturated fats normally contained in these essential cooking products. This substitution will benefit cardiac and arterial health in general. Most diabetics learn very early that maintenance of good blood sugar is most easily achieved when patients or their caregivers cook as opposed to eating fast food or prepared foods. Cooking not only provides superior nutrition necessary to treat diabetes but also is a form of physical therapy for diabetic hands that suffer from neuropathy. Of course, diabetics should take caution with any flames or hot objects. Cannabis may also be used to make topical creams (mixed with aloe vera and/or emu oil) that can be applied directly to hands and feet affected by neuropathic pain and tingling. Night time can be particularly difficult for diabetics. A syndrome known as "restless leg syndrome" (RLS) is common. Cannabis helps still RLS which is otherwise treated with quinine and/or muscle relaxants like Flexaril. For night time it is recommended that patients use a vaporizer or smoked cannabis to aid in falling asleep. If night time hypoglycemia is a problem then a cannabis cookie can be very helpful. Cannabis cookies are great treatment so long as portion control is exercised. Sickle Cell Anemia Cannabis does not cure Sickle Cell but is a highly effective agent in managing pain. Patients utilizing medical cannabis can expect better pain relief with lower doses of major narcotics. Cannabis also acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory without NSAID side effects. Cannabis acts both centrally in the brain and directly in the periphery. Further, cannabis provides neuroprotective effects that may reduce the incidence of retinopathy and neuropathy. Shingles Many AIDS patients prefer smoked Marijuana to oral THC, due to its quickness of action, ease of controlling the dose, and absence of side-effects. In addition to appetite stimulation, many AIDS patients use Marijuana for pain associated with neuropathy, shingles, etc.

I know cannabis will help here in her struggle with the ailments she has, especially the pain and inflammation. |

| One issue that is similar in all of the diseases that you mentioned above is STRESS. Everyone of these illnesses is negatively effected by stress and relieving stress is the single best pain reliever and tretment that you can bring to your mother at this point. My concern with trying to introduce your mother to the use of cannabis (marijuana) as a treatment for her ailments at this point is that ehr reaction may be more one of stress that you, her teenager, has access to "drugs". This could be seriously stressful to her and therefore extremely disabling. Keeping her as calm and mellow as possible -- even without the use of cannabis at this time -- would really be the best move at this point in time. Soon enough, when you are a botanical science major in college you can show her the actual scienctific abstracts from the Italian and Israeli Universities where the cutting edge research into the use of cannabinoids as treatment of these diseases is being performed. Until then, you really don't have more than word of mouth to combat 67 years of Amercan Moral Propoganda and Reefer Madness. For now, good grades, not getting someone/or becoming pregnant, going to college and/or getting a decent paying job that won't fire you are what will keep her calmest. ...that and lot's of love -- rides to the doctor -- understanding...and a trip to see Menopause: The Musical if it's playing in your city.
