Probably because he's new to the place, but hey, I'm a new mod, so hopefully you'll forgive both of us for any missteps we may make.

Krammer, take a quick look around and read the descriptions to all the forums, so you'll have a better idea of what belongs where.

moved to Chemical and Psychological.

"You only trip out once" is something I've never heard and frankly, couldn't possibly have any scientific basis. People can trip out while they're sober (panic attacks for example), and people who smoke all the time may never have tripped out in their entire life. I also know multiple people who have "tripped out" multiple times from smoking.

"Tripping out", the physiological condition of paranoia combined with panic, can occur to anyone, it's simply a bodily reaction to any number of various stimuli, and has nothing to do with marijuana. As I said, people who never smoke have panic attacks all the time, it just depends on the person and what kind of stimuli he's under (stress, for example). Marijuana has a tendency to increase the likelihood in some people, due to its effect on your body -- things like increased blood pressure, sense of paranoia, occasionally distorted vision, etc.

Bottom line, if weed makes you trip out, you have one of two choices -- either don't smoke as much the next time (if you smoke less it's effect on your body will be less, thus the stimulus for tripping out will be less likely to cause the panic), or you can simply exercise mind over matter and realize that it's up to you whether you trip out or not. If you sit there in the dark smoking in the middle of the night with strange sounds going on outside, and continue to think about tripping out, etc, you might just induce it on yourself. Likewise, if you occupy yourself with other things and don't let yourself dwell on the possibility of tripping out, the possibility will be reduced. It's all in your head, and you have control of your own reality. Just think of it as reverse-hypochondria. =)

"It's all in the mind, ya know." - John Lennon

The Law of Consciousness is "Wherever you put your attention, that's what you get". When you're not stoned your attention wanders but generally you're on automatic pilot and stay somewhat focused on whatever you're doing. Your ability to concentrate is moderately good. When you're stoned your mind tends to go in ten directions at once. You have to focus consciously if you want to concentrate on one thing. When you learn to do that your powers of concentration are greatly increased. If you don't you're in danger of your attention latching onto something you really don't want to be looking at. That's what tripping out is all about.

Strong emotion tends to focus attention. You might be sitting around spacing out with your mind looking at a hundred different things, none of which grab your attention. Wandering around randomly through the streets and alleys of your mind, you open a door and out pops something that at one time really scared you. A strong emotion arises and suddenly you're no longer wandering around, you're focused. Remember, "wherever you put your attention, that's what your get".

The 10,000 things recede into the dim background and all you can see is that scary thing. You begin to see everything in terms of that scary thing. That's called paranoia - you interpret everything that happens as supporting what you're scared of. Because you're stoned it's easy to get confused. Paranoia plus confusion equal panic.

So, yes, you can trip out into scary spaces any time, straight or stoned. It's all a matter of getting focused on something negative and being unable to shift that focus. To avoid it you first have to realize that attention is a tool, like a telescope, and that you can point it anywhere you want. If you get it pointed in a direction you don't like you don't have to leave it there.

At any rate, that's how it looks from here.

Yep, and the same is true of life in general, completely apart from smoking.

If you focus on negative things happening to you, and your current negative situation lacking happiness and success, you're likely to wallow in it and cause more negative things to happen to you, or at least increase the chance of them (and then you ask -- how come my life is like this? why does everyone else get all the breaks?)

Likewise, if you are determined to be happy and successful, you can do that no matter what situation you're in, and no matter what the weather is like. You carry your own weather with you.

"Your focus determines your reality."
