| Hi, I know someone who suffers from severe arthritis and I was hoping to alleviate some of her pain with marijuana. I know that she won't want any of the mind altering effects, only the pain reduction. Does anyonw know of any good ways to go about doing this? Any information you have would be a great help. Thank you! |

| I guess I don't understand the question. Non-mind altering? Perhaps you should alter your friend's mind and just give her/him some facts on the issue. There really isn't any way of going "around" the mind-altering (I'm assuming you mean the high) effects of marijuana. That's what makes it what it is ![]()

| Mind altering is a strong word to use for marijuana, but i can see why some people could consider it that from what i know, certain strains of marijuana can effect the body buzz more or less than the head buzz that you get. less head buzz means it doesnt really mess with your thought process as much if at all, sometimes, dependind on the strain and as long as you dont smoke too much. a nice sized hit or two should be enough for medical marijuana. im not sure how much you have to smoke for arthritis has she ever used marijuana? |

| You can't have the cake and eat it too. Either way, opiates traditionally prescribed for pain are also mind altering, why is it a problem if marijuana also does this? But maybe she should either ingest or look for strongly indica strains. That's my suggestions. |

| Not to get too too philosophical, but... our mind is ourself. Pain we feel originates in our mind. Anything that stops pain/gives a new outlook/ or anything similar is by definition mind altering. Thousands of years of churchy propoganda, coupled with a hundred years of government meddling, have connvinced people to hate pleasure, to hate nature, to hate consciousness. But that doesn't make it right, or a noble goal to acchieve. Do your best to help your friend accept whole cannabis, with all of its affects. You can't have your hash brownie and eat it too... It does what it does, and it does it best when we don't pervert its nature. ![]() |

| Also the prescription drug called Marinol which is synthetic THC also shouldn't be as mind-altering as bud itself.

| Most of the reports I read from medical Marijuana patients indicate that they have minimal mind-altering effects from the Marijuana that they use. I suspect that this is due to a rapidly escalating tolerance to these effects that develops with constant use. Tolerance to the pain-relieving effects develops slowly if at all. Angel Raich, one of the plaintiffs in the Marijuana case currently before the U.S. Supreme Court, says that she uses nine pounds of high quality Marijuana every year. When I first heard that my thought was, "Wow! This woman must be flat on her back on the couch 24/7!" What I found out was that she is a highly active mother and says that she doesn't get high at all. From my own experience as a recreational smoker, I know that if I smoke a lot of pot and smoke frequently it soon takes more and more to achieve the same level of high I got before. Extrapolating from this phenomena, I can see where constant users (Raich smokes, vaporizers, or eats cannabis every two hours.) would develop such a tolerance to the dosage that they'd get no high at all.

I've found that ingested Marijuana is much smoother and less disruptive of the thought processes than smoked or vaporized Marijuana. There is no roller coaster ride of rapid onset, short plateau, and long fade-away. | |
