I have heard so much contorversial information on whether or not weed is safer than alcohol and ciggarettes. I reacently got into a debate about this with someone, and although they didn't really have an argument, i had a hard time showing them that weed is safer. Does anyone know of any documents with citied references or web pages(non bias!!!!) that support this theory?

I highly doubt that anyplace will have a truly unbiased perspective on marijuana vs. alcohol and tobacco, but I'm sure that The Erowid and The Lycaeum will provide you with a closer to nonbiased opinion than you'd find at the Phillip Morris site.

Well, just for general information, you may already have read http://my.marijuana.com/myths.php3 but if you haven't, it should give you plenty of ammunition.

Personally, I had a very striking demonstration of the difference between weed and alcohol after a recent visit to Amsterdam. In Amsterdam, people don't drink much; but quite a few people smoke weed. In the time we were there, we saw just one person causing trouble in the streets - and he turned out to be a drunken foreigner. When I came back home, I had to walk through part of the city centre to get to my bus, and guess what? I met about 2 or 3 gangs of drunks wandering around causing disruption in the space of about 20 minutes. Great fun for all the family!

Actually i believe both alcohol and weed have pros and cons, you can overdose on alcohol and die; with weed you can't overdose, with weed you have a chance of lung cancer, or your reproductive system could be damaged..with alcohol you can develop a disease called alcoholism..you also can damage your liver too..now for cigarettes and weed, weed has more cancerous chemicals then cigarettes..the reason many people die from tobacco is because its really available and you smoke a whole lot more then weed, a half of pack of cigarettes a day is ALOT of tobacco..with weed, you dont even need to smoke a cigarette worth to get high, well for my case..hope that helped

I think you have to distinguish between the drug itself and the method of delivery - marijuana itself has practically no long term health effects, but obviously smoking it does, just like cigarettes. Needless to say, we're all familiar with the possible health risks associated with smoking, and I suppose damage to the reproductive system may well be one of them.

As for marijuana smoke containing more carcinogens than tobacco smoke, I'm don't think it actually does. As far as I know, the two are almost identical, apart from the psychoactive contents.

It is true, though, that cigarettes generally have filters, while joints do not. But as Rxrgood4u put it in another post, not many people can roll a joint as tight as Phillip Morris. So all in all, I think the risks associated with smoking weed are probably smaller than those associated with cigarettes, unless you're smoking *lots* of it

Actually through extensive research i have found that the tar and other harmful products they report in weed are way off the mark. The fact is they test the entire plant where we only smoke the bud itself. Where it's been said to me one gram of pot equals 10 cigarettes that gram actually included leaves. Once the leaves are removed marijuana actually has only 33 percent as much tar. As far as carcinogenics are concerned im lost but if someone found out for me i'd appreciate it.

The issue should be "does smoking marijuana cause lung cancer", not "marijuana has X times the amount of carcinogens as tobacco". Research shows that marijuana smokers who do not use tobacco have a lower incidence of lung cancer than people who don't smoke anything. People who smoke both substances have a lower incidence of lung cancer than people who smoke only tobacco.
