Default Why is medical marijuana so expensive?

I've been reading a lot about medical marijuana dispensaries in California. The prices the stories quote sound exactly like prices being paid on the black market. Medical marijuana is not supposed to be grown for profit and it doesn't cost $400/oz to grow even the finest bud. Who's breaking the law? Where does all this money go?

It seems outrageous to me that sick people should have to pay black market prices for their weed. It sounds like the dispensaries are just legal outlets for cutthroat drug dealers.

Whether it's for-profit or not-for-profit, a business is still a business.

And in the current state of affairs, you're taking a BIG risk by running a marijuana dispensary, even with a little piece of paper that says you're licensed to do so.

I can't blame them for charging $400 an ounce, when half of the existing dispensaries are raided continually, their assets (including their complete inventory) seized by the federal government. I can't blame somebody charging $400 for something it cost them $50 to make, if there's a very real chance that at any time Uncle Sam could come in and confiscate your entire multi-thousand dollar inventory, and throw you in jail to boot.

In order for dispensaries to be legal under state law, they have to be non-profit enterprises.

While you might not blame someone for trying to take a 700% profit it does make the whole operation illegal. Dispensaries are making money hand over fist by profiteering off the suffering of sick people, many of whom are living on small fixed incomes. That's illegal, immoral, and disgusting.

Not for Profit does not mean "making no profit" it means that the corporation is not paying dividends to share/stockholders. It has every right to charge a market fee and to pay a competitive salary for it's employees. In addition it must take into account overhead.

Overhead would include not only the cost of production and sales but would require that a fund be kept for insurance and legal fees as with any business. The fees for these two particular items are extremely high -- pardon the pun -- for these types of operations.

Tack the word medical on anything and the price goes up. Why? Because if it's for medical purposes you NEED it and will pay more for something you have to have. Compare the price of a power wheelchair and an ATV. Ain't capitalism great???
