Default Quinonoid Derivatives of Cannabinoids show Antitumor Activity

J. Med. Chem. 2004, 47, 3800-3806

Synthesis and Antitumor Activity of Quinonoid Derivatives of Cannabinoids

Natalya M. Kogan, Ruth Rabinowitz, Paloma Levi, Dan Gibson, Peter Sandor, Michael Schlesinger, and Raphael Mechoulam

The researchers synthesized quinonoid derivatives of cannabidiol (CBD), delta-8-THC, and cannabinol (CBN) and tested their antitumor activity in mice. With a dose of 5 mg/kg, the mice showed significant reduction in tumor size compared to controls.

The most potent of these derivatives, both in vitro and in vivo, was that of CBD.

The group also reports that the cannabinoids themselves have been shown to reduce tumor size. They provide a few references, which I may investigate later this week.

The quinonine derivatives are expected to provide enhanced potency, since many compounds with quinone groups are effective against cancer.

Why these compounds behave as such is not known, although several mechanisms for other quinones have been suggested. They do not bind to the CB1 receptor, since the phenol present on the natural cannabinoids, which is required for binding to the receptor, is not present in the quinonoid derivatives.

The most potent of these derivatives, both in vitro and in vivo, was that of CBD.

Which is why things like Marinol are worthless because they are 100% THC and things like Savitex are much better because it is essentially a liquid version of the plant and not just a synthetic aspect.

Although I agree that the mixture of cannabinoids is better than 100% THC, I don't think you can draw that conclusion from the above info. The researchers used delta-8-THC, while marinol is straight delta-9-THC.

I would be interested in comparing the potency of the quinonoid derivative of delta-9-THC with that of these derivatives.

Quinone...

Quinine?? As in Tonic Water?

Since my patients don't have a lot of time to wait around for the scientists to discover things like ... the sun rises in the morning and sets at night... and a dear friend with mestastized cancer will be in town to spend 10 days...any feedback on that would be appreciated.

A quinone is basically any compound with an oxygen double-bonded to an unsaturated ring.

Quinine is a drug... I don't know much about it, but I looked it up, and it doesn't contain a quinone.

Give your friend some cookies, cannabinoids reduce tumor size!

Much love to your friend, I hope they recover. I have a friend who recovered from cancer, and it's a difficult process. Don't let them get hooked on morphine or hydrocodone / codeine, that's the worst!!

Oh she is going to end up being stuffed like a piggy before she leaves here -- so much for all her size 2s!

And lots of loving and positive energy too...that helps make miracles occur. Now I just have to convince her that even if the docotrs give her 6 months...her body doesn;t have to listen to them

Thanks for the response...
