Default Letter from NIDA director

If anyone knows about the refrences in this article, please respond.

Quote:
Letter from the director,

In the 1970s, the baby boom generation was coming of age, and its drug of choice was marijuana. By 1979, more than 60 percent of 12th-graders had tried marijuana at least once in their lives. From this peak, the percentage of 12th-graders who had ever used marijuana decreased for more than a decade, dropping to a low of 33 percent in 1992. However, in 1993, first-time marijuana use by 12th-graders was on the upswing, reaching 50 percent by 1997. Although the percentage of 12th-graders who have experience with marijuana has remained roughly level since then, there is still reason to be concerned. 1 In 2002, an estimated 2.6 million Americans used marijuana for the first time. Roughly two-thirds of them were under age 18.2 Furthermore, the marijuana that is available today can be 5 times more potent than the marijuana of the
1970s.3

The use of marijuana can produce adverse physical, mental, emotional, and behavioral changes, and - contrary to popular belief - it can be addictive. Marijuana smoke, like cigarette smoke, can harm the lungs 4,5,6 The use of marijuana can impair short-term memory,7,8 verbal skills,9 and judgment10 and distort perception.11,12 It also may weaken the immune system 13,14,15,16 and possibly increase a user's likelihood of developing cancer.14,17 Finally, the increasing use of marijuana by very young teens may have a profoundly negative effect upon their development9, 18, 19,20

Simply put, it's the usual bull**** spewed forth from government. It's a nonobjective and biased argument that also come off as vague, doesn't explain all the facts, and is misinforming and even wrong.

I recommend picking up a book about it, if you're interested. Our FAQ section has a list of them.

This is just a repetition of the marijuana myths promoted by prohibitionists for at least 50 years. Our myths section goes through them one by one and debunks each of them.

To help put the comments of the others in context also read the following web page, it's worth a look for details on some of what we've been told in the past.

Debunking "Gutter Science"

As you'll read there the guy who actually performed the bulk of the US Governments lung research is a bit bemused by what the press and the Government has done with the results of his studies. He's pretty open in other places I've read him about the fact that he expected worse, but he's scientist enough to admit he didn't find proof if it. Just smaller studies that couldn't be reproduced and a handful of maybes in addition to minor damage to larger airways and such.

The Government just has a habit of taking handfuls of maybes and jacking them up into assumed certainties as well as continuing to make use of studies that have been debunked as garbage for years after the fact. Look up the terms Pepsi cancer cause, or the details on eggs or coffee if you'd like. You'll find handfuls of scary maybes there too, what do you think we could do with that stuff with some effort?

Read the comments by the Administrative Law Judge for the DEA after a seven month long case and months of deliberation on the value of medical marijuana at the following link, his comments are near the end of the document Judge Young's ruling (Pages 53-69). He said pot is safer than many foods we commonly eat, and he had reason for it. That's just what the science actually proves. Risk factors alone don't mean it should be illegal, and what can be proven isn't all that serious.

OPINION AND RECOMMENDED RULING, FINDINGS OF
FACT, CONCLUSIONS OF LAW AND DECISION OF
ADMINISTRATIVE LAW JUDGE
FRANCIS L. YOUNG, Administrative Law Judge

In December 1997, we asked Dr. Tashkin again, and he unequivocably stated that "marijuana does not cause or potentiate emphysema in any way." In addition, there has not been one case of lung cancer ever attributed to smoking cannabis.
Dr. Tashkin stated his results publicly just a few weeks ago for the first time here in Florida the Clearwater FL conference for the International Cannabinoid Research Society. Here is a link tot he Front Page Article LINK. In fact there may be a protective factor to those who smoke tobacco cigarettes who also smoke pot!
