As far as I know there are 2 important chemicals and here's a somewhat subjective idea of what they do:

THC - "high", cerebral sensations euphoria
CBD (and CBN to a lesser extent) - "stoned", mellowed-out

Smoking a JOINT which leads to more of the THC feeling, might be because NOT all of the CBD has time or heat energy to be completely volitized. This is especially the case with vaporizers and even bowls (to a lesser extent).

However, in the case of the G-BONG where the flame is heavily applied for a long duration, all the the CBD's are turned into smoke and go straight into your lungs, giving you that sleepy STONED couchlock feel that most stoners get off bongs. The case is the same for cannabutter (if its been well-cooked).

It has been my experience that bongs are much more weed "efficent" in this sense. However, joints are much better for activities or sports during the day, because you don't get that tired and stupid feeeling, instead you get that energetic happy vibe.

Moving to Chemical & Physiological. Interesting theory, nothing new though. Joints are the most efficient, and I wrote a writeup on why vaporizers give you a different high (CBD wise that is) compared to a joint.
