| from theantidrug.com: Effects of Marijuana on the Brain. Researchers have found that THC changes the way in which sensory information gets into and is acted on by the hippocampus. This is a component of the brain's limbic system that is crucial for learning, memory, and the integration of sensory experiences with emotions and motivations. Investigations have shown that THC suppresses neurons in the information-processing system of the hippocampus. In addition, researchers have discovered Please tell me what yall think b/c i plan to vaporize dank mj for a long, long time but i don't want it to make me a horrible computer worker since, according to the para above, THC f***s your brain up. I really, really hope that this is just propaganda! |

| This is probably just more ONDCP scare-tactic BS. Can you provide a link to the source of this information? If we can take a look at the actual research to which it refers we can critique it. The ONDCP has been trying to tell us that marijuana causes brain damage for decades. It's never been true before. If it means anything, I suspect it has to do with the acute effects of marijuana (i.e."getting high") rather than brain damage.

| here it is http://www.theantidrug.com/drug_info...-marijuana.asp also i just wanted to point out that i've noticed that all anti-drug sites (dea website, streetdrugs.org) only show pictures of nasty, dirty schwag (probably to increase the hateful views towards MJ) |

| As usual, the prohibitionists don't provide any citations for their claims. Since they have rarely said anything true about marijuana in the past I see no reason to start believing them now, not without a cite to their "research", which is usually pretty shaky even when you can find it. |

| I didn't see the words "brain damage" or "permanent" in that quote...Basically all they are doing is explaining the short term effects of marijuana on a user in "scientist speak." Instead of them saying, "Marijuana makes you laugh, have trouble recalling what you were talking about a few seconds ago (thus causing you to laugh about it some more!) and can result in seeing funny things you wouldn't normally see," they are just saying it scientifically...We have cannabinoid receptors in our brains, namely in the Hippocampus..........So do you think they call it a "Hippocampus" because we have little hippopotamuses in our heads who go to segregated college classes here?................................... Oh, shut up, you know you chuckled....but yeah, basically, these scientists are stating the obvious in a not-so-obvious language. Marijuana effects the brain, but not permenately. Peace out |

| CLAIM: MARIJUANA CAUSES BRAIN DAMAGE Critics state that marijuana has been shown to damage brain cells and that this damage, in turn, causes memory loss, cognitive impairment, and difficulties in learning. THE FACTS The original basis of this claim was a report that, upon postmortem examinations, structural changes in several brain regions were found in two rhesus monkeys exposed to THC. 51 Because these changes primarily involved the hippocampus, a cortical brain region known to play an important role in learning and memory, this finding suggested possible negative consequences for human marijuana users. Additional studies, employing rodents, reported similar brain changes. In the most recently published study, rhesus monkeys were exposed through face-mask inhalation to the smoke equivalent of four to five joints per day for one year. When sacrificed seven months later, there was no observed alteration of hippocampal architecture, cell size, cell number, or synaptic configuration. The authors conclude: "while behavioral and neuroendocrinal effects are observed during marijuana smoke exposure in the monkey, residual neuropathological and neurochemical effects of marijuana exposure were not observed seven months after the year-long marijuana smoke regimen." 53Thus, 20 years after the first report of brain damage in two marijuana-exposed monkeys, the claim of damage to brain cells has been effectively disproven. No postmortem examinations of the brains of human marijuana users have ever been conducted. However, numerous studies have explored marijuana effect on brain-related cognitive functions. Many employ an experimental design - in which subjects are given marijuana in a laboratory setting, and then compared to controls on a variety of measures involving attention, learning and memory. In a number of studies, no significant differences were detected. 54 In fact, there is substantial research demonstrating that that marijuana intoxication does not impair the retrieval of information learned previously. 55 However, there is evidence that marijuana, particularly in high doses, may interfere with users' ability to transfer new information into longterm memory. 56While there is general agreement that, while under the influence of marijuana, learning is less efficient, 57 there is no evidence that marijuana users - even longterm users - suffer permanent impairment. Indeed, numerous studies comparing chronic marijuana users with non-user controls have found no significant differences in learning, memory recall or other cognitive functions. 58 And this actually has sources, unlike that propaganda nonsense.
