Hi, I have been smoking weed for approx 3 - 4 months now, and I've heard it can trigger schizophrenia, paranoia and psychosis, I trust weed but I have a cousin who started on weed but then went onto harder drugs and got schizophrenia. I'm 80% sure it was the harder drugs, but i'm wondering is there any chance of this happening to me? I'm not going to go on any harder drugs, but I would like to know that I'm safe smoking weed.

It doesn't cause any of those things. I have been smoking weed for seven years and I dont have any problems.

Schizophrenia is an illness that effects the mood and how the mind interprets outside stimuli. The moods may be depression, intense elation, manic energy, over reaction to stimuli both real and imagined included visual and auditory hallucinations.

It is unknown what the causes are for Shizophrenia and Schizo-affective disorders but it is believed to have a a genetic basis. This means if someone in your family has this particular cluster of symptoms, other in the family tree have a greater possibility of having the same symptoms to a greater or lesser extent up to and including the actual illness Schizophrenia or any ofthe Schizo affective disorders. An additional symptom of the Schizo disorders is dissociation -- shutting off or shutting out stimuli, and this can be seen as anhedonism. lack of response to stimuli.

Schizophrenia is not Multiple Personality Disorder.

Marijuana does not cause Schizophrenia.

It has been reported in the media that marijuana use may cause the onset of a schizophrenic episode. This report is based on information gleaned from Schizop and Schizoa Patients in the ER who appeared there because of a schizophrenic episode. Drug use testing would show cannabis even if the patient had used within the past day or 7 days or even 30 days.

Since many schizophrenics self medicate with pot because they firmly believe that it helps allay the side effects of the medication they have to take to control their mood swings and thereby function at their highest level of competence, independence and as contributing members of society, many will also show up positive on a cannabis urine analysis.

Misplaced cause and effect.

But please -- do be careful about your own personal health -- be safe and sane in smoking -- and if things start heading a bit out of whack, trust yourself to ask for help.

ive ben smoking for about 3 yrs the first 2yrs were great but then after that my high turned into a schizo nightmare and paranoia became huge since i was an EVERYday smoker it really effected my life. It became pretty bad, everytime i smoked up i would have these paranoia,anxiety,SCHIZO moods, i just started smoking everynow and then but now im back to EVERYday smoking and the symptoms are a lil more down but still there i just time it so im not at alll high at work or nething important. Uhm....you don't just GET schizophrenia....and ya sure as **** don't GET it from smoking pot...it's not contageous....you can get a cold from smoking pot...after someone with a cold...but that's cause germs are spread and you can GET a germ...ya can't just GET mental illness....it's either there or it's not....

Research suggests that smoking a large amount of cannabis frequently will trigger psychosis in 1/10 smokers. It is not something science will be able to clinically trial as it is inhumane to test people with a strong possibility of the test causing a psychotic episode.

It is a serious drug, my tip is 1 in 10 is too high a risk when the outcome could be you are a nut case for the rest of your life.

Do a search on google 'cannaabis and psychosis' and read some articles.
