| i recently found out one of the people i've been smoking with (passing joints with) is living with full blown aids. i'm not naive and am well aware that the chances of being infected through passing a joint are miniscule...but that doesn't quite sate my paranoia, so i thought i'd bring my question before the cannabis council and seek your guidance. ![]() i'm thinking of getting tested just to put my mind at ease...but is it really worth it? how long would i have to wait before the tests could detect anything? what are the chances/how could one become infected through passing a joint? i did a search but found nothing specific to my queries. my thanks in advance. ![]() |

| You have a good point. HIV caan stay in your system for years w/o being detected. My advice, smoke your own joint and I'm sure they will understand

| HIV can only be transmitted through body fluid to body fluid contact. In regards to smoking a joint, they would have to have a cut on their lip or tongue that gets blood on the joint (saliva doesn't transmit the virus), and then you likewise would have to have an open cut that same day on your lip or tongue for you to absorb their blood. It won't go through skin (theirs or yours) and it won't go through saliva, or tears, etc. Pretty much blood and semenal/vaginal fluid is it I think.

| I'm sorry, what year is this? First, is he living with HIV or does he have AIDS? There's a difference. In the UK, AIDS is currently defined as an illness characterised by the development of one or more AIDS-indicating conditions. (The US has a different definition.) Second, EVERY SEXUALLY ACTIVE ADULT SHOULD BE TESTED FOR HIV, every six months. It's not just a "gay disease." The only way you can be HIV+ for years without being detected is by not being tested. Third, there has only been ONE documented case of oral-oral HIV transmission. It involved a heterosexual couple with extensive gum disease and bleeding gums. So unless you and your toking partner have periodontitis and are deep kissing (or going further), or you're IV drug users sharing needles, you have nothing to worry about.

| Isn't the statistic a bit different now than it used to be? Aren't the majority of people getting this disease actually heterosexual? I'm monogamous and i still get checked once a year ![]()

| HIV has always been a heterosexual disease in Africa and other resource-limited areas, and increasing so in the US: in 2003, women accounted for over a quarter of the new AIDS cases, and most likely a higher proportion of new HIV infections. |
