Question Addictions

It has been proved that you can't get physically or mentally addicted to marijuana. To leave marijuana smoking behind, you only need enough willpower.

Now, I am curious how is the mental addiction different than that one? Do I like feel that my brain stops functioning if I can't have any more drugs when I'm mentally addicted?

And what's the deal with physical addiction? I can't like move my body or something?!

In simple terms - it is all about dependence, physical or mental. If you want some interesting reading (and good answers to your questions - and there are many kinds of addictions), check out the "Research Institue on Addictions":

http://www.ria.org/

I think it is a pretty interesting site.

ive known people to develop mental dependencies, and i wouldnt rule out physical conditions among people going through a "withdrawal" (i.o.w. going cold turkey from frequent toking)

i think it just depends on will power, as u stated

i dont know how it can be proven that weed isnt mentally addicting, the fact is, that most people who toke are mentally addicted . . . well, it seems true to me at least

i think u need to do some clarifying of that statement, and really rethink how u can incorporate willpower in with statements of addiction and deny that weed can be mentally addicting, because if u say, 'To leave marijuana smoking behind, you only need enough willpower.' well, that to me seems akward due to the fact that u just stated that it is proven not to be addicting . . .

i think marijuana addiction can be a lot like masterbating can be for a teenage boy with raging hormones, u just cant and will not stop thinking about all those lovely girls
(if u didnt get that... buds and flowers used for toking form on the female plant) heh . . . heh

anyways, i try to prove all that **** wrong, and i often try to prove to myself that i can go x amount of time without a toke, it helps to ease the self-conscious side, and the labels we get as people who toke ('those freaking stoners, when will they learn to put down a bong')
i get that a lot, and it just pisses me off . . . due to the fact that people dont even know me, and automatically judge me for partaking in herbal . . .

man, venting feelings . . . heh, good luck on finding the info u need orange

Physical addiction refers to experiencing withdrawl symptoms. Mental is when you think that you need it. Both are difficult to overcome. Marijuana can be mentally addictive, but so can twinkies. I have heard of a few people experiencing withdrawl from marijuana, but these indivuals were heavy smokers over a long period of time. The symptoms I heard were very minor in comparison with other drugs, and were rare as well.

I have heard recently that most addiction experts don't separate the types of addictions anymore since both have a mental and a physical side. This makes sense if you think about it. One becomes mentally addicted, their use and their tolerance increases and then they develop withdrawl symptoms when they go without. A better thing to say about marijuana is that it is the least addictive substance out there, including alcohol.

yeah I agree on the part of marijuana being mentally addicting, like i want to smoke a joint right now (i dont have one) but a person can just as easily shrug it off. I have never seen anyone addicted but seen many a' chronics around me and nearly all my friends smoke pot regualry, but no addiction problems here

Default Mentally Addicted to Mentos

I used to be addicted mentally to Mentos.. VERY BADLY!.. It killed my blood sugar level, trust me.. I'm living proof that you can be addicted to anything.. It started with the desire to have clean fresh breath, and ended up in a way that i felt insecure without them. I needed them cuz i told myself i needed them. But i really didn't need the damn little tasty suckers.. Well, just my view of thinking about addiction.. if you think you need it, and you think you can't go without it, you're addicted.. But if you think about it as just a hobby, something you do if you feel like it. Weed is one of those things that can work its way into someone's life. You find more friends that do it, and you mentally become attached to it, cuz you're life is built around it.. (well of course if you let it happen)... Just take it easy, and do not feel guilty about doing it, cuz if you do, you'll crave it.

Hey, i'm just talking about personal experience.. and being a teenager i can truly connect with the masterbation statement You say you ain't gonna do it, but the "desire" is just too much..

(a person is strong enough to resist anything.. and also a person could be week enough to get addicted to anything.. even to mentos..)

(ps. mentos addiction was not physical, and i don't think weed is physically addicting..)

Actually it is possible you Mentos addiction was physical. I was addicted to 'vending machines' for awhile. I was hooked on getting my blood sugar off the charts. I ate so much sugar candy, its really funny...but I wasted soo much money every day on the vending machine. I think being addicted to sugar is a physical addiction though because you get very slight signs of withdrawl if you binge a lot on it. (Slightly depressed/drained feeling, shaking hands, etc)

I am lucky because I find I can't get addicted to things (well maybe crack, but I am not touching that).

I smoked cigarettes for 2 years (disgusting) and while my friends were freaking when they tried to quit I basically stopped smoking and never had a 'thirst' for them ever again. Last year I could have been considered a major alcoholic, yet I quit drinking (because I was feeling down a lot) and I never wanted it again.

However, I am addicted to Diet Coke, no joke. I drink a lot of it, and get headaches from the caffeine - but if I quit the stuff for a week I get really bad headaches. The worst part is the thirst - NOTHING not even water quenches my thirst, even right now I have a constant thirst for it.

I quit drinking that horrible stuff for a month, but the problem is my family drinks it like crazy. Haven't had it for a week and a half (it disgusts me that I drink it) and I have had a constant headache and thirst.

Guess this is evidence that everyone should consume only natural things

Default I'm addicted :)

I'm truly addicted to Fanta. It's about the only lemonade I drink. Well, f**k that - it's about the only thing I drink

I absolutely love the drink, the taste, the color (Orange ). I think they should hire me in some kind of commercials etc
