Default Zyban

OK, I've read the warnings about possible links to zyban/marijuana combinations to psychotic behavior. However, in researching it further, I have came across only one case study when psychotic behavior was initially believed to be caused by the interaction, and in that study, it was concluded that the drugs'interaction most likely DID NOT result in the behavioir.i'm looking for some firsthand accounts of people using the combination, especially in regards to tobacco cessation. Anyone out there?

i know that my father, a heavy marijuana user himself, stopped taking zyban due to the onset of a depression. though that could just as easily be attributed to his discontinuation of cigarette smoking.

my personal oppinion: hallucinogens, an absence of nicotine and another mind-altering substance such as zyban is a potent enough combination to seek other means to give up smoking.

my analogy has always been that if you can get through a hypnotherapy session without laughing you've got no reason to smoke in the first place.

found a wiki for you:

Quote:
UK Alleged Severe Adverse Reactions

Wellbutrin is not licensed for use in the UK; Glaxo Smith Kline withdrew the licensing application from the MHRA before completion of the process as licensing looked unlikely following serious concerns about the safety of the drug. At one point Zyban accounted for 25% of all MHRA yellow card adverse drug reactions in the UK. It has also been allegedly connected with suicides and severe and sometimes permanent psychological disorders including depression, personality change, memory and anger control issues, general psychological disturbance and abnormality as well as psychosis and mania. Stroke, sometimes leading to death, and suicide or suicidal thoughts have also been noted. It is also banned or restricted from use in other developed international countries. In the UK 66 people (or their surviving families) alleged Zyban as being responsible for their problems which were cardio vascular, psychiatric or allergic. The mechanism for the exposure to a toxic dose and/or alleged damage is not fully understood (in fact, the drug's mechanism itself is not fully understood). The latest hypothesis is that a toxic build up of the drug and/or its metabolites can occur in people who may be unable to rid themselves of this drug at the usual speed, thereby allegedly causing a graduated build up which may constitute a toxic dose. This may be characterised by an inherited genetic condition and may be possibly identified by two tests which may identify the condition, a P450 and or 2CYP Cytochrome test to identify genetically inherited poor metabolism and susceptibility to a possible toxic dose exposure. Only a few people in a thousand are in this group, but alleged side effects can be debilitating.

Availability in the United Kingdom

If it is to be used as an aid in quitting smoking, it can be obtained one time only, and cannot be legally prescribed afterwards.

Zyban for smoking cessation and Wellbutrin for depression are actually the same medication: Bupropion. I've been taking a daily 300 mg dose of Wellbutrin XL for a couple of years now. (I consume at least a small amount of cannabis on a daily basis.) It is quite effective in reducing the mood swings that are part of my bipolar condition. It has no side effects that I've noticed, except that I now weigh less at 57 than I did at 18, a welcome change. Part of that might be due to my high-energy German Shepherd who requires two hours of exercise every day.

Wellbutrin is a marked improvement over other antidepressants and mood stabilizers I've tried. I have found no difference in my experience with marijuana before and after commencing my use of Wellbutrin and have had no adverse reactions.

Thanks Buzzby, and you as well Hashishi. Hashishi, was your father drinking when taking the zyban? From what I have gathered through reading users' ancedotes, the two don't mix well at all, and cause far more problems than cannabis interactions. I think I'm going to go ahead with my pans on obtaining a script for the zyban. I see no harm in trying it to see if it helps, and if I have problems, I'll discontinue usage and seek other avenues of stopping my addiction. I managed to quit drinking after years of abuse, so hopefully once I put my mind to it I can rid myself of this addiction as well.

Any and all other comments from current or ex zyban users who use cannabis would be appreciated!

I was a completely different person when I was on zyban a couple of years ago (unsuccessful with the quitting smoking unfortunately). I didn't notice the change myself but my girlfriend made sure to point it to so I stopped taking it and was back to normal. I would have severe mood swings and would snap over the stupidest of things.

Also, I found with drinking I got ALOT more drunk from much less booze while on zyban.

The only good thing I noticed about the medication was the increased energy when taking it.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I smoked marijuana daily while on zyban and I didn't notice anything different. The high seemed the same.

Granted, its only my second day of using zyban, but as of now, the only side effects I've noticed are reduced hunger, and suprisingly (after only 2 days) less desire to smoke. I smoke fewer cigarettes, and tend to only smoke 1/2 to 3/4 of one instead of finishing it. I had my doubts before, but I think this may just be what I needed to get me to quit. Not to mention, I won't mind losing a few lbs in the process!
