| Marijuana as a medical benefit for the deaf and hard of hearing. I am diagnosed with severe hearing loss since birth and wear hearing aids to enable me to hear the sounds of life. Of course the hearing aids create an artifical hearing for me, so it is an "electronic" artifical sound that is it providing me. But I discovered the Marijuana powers of hearing when I blazed up before going to the nightclub. I took 2 hits, and was suddenly able to understand voices, sounds, and music at an UNBELIEVABLE clarity that I have never heard before. Everything sounded crystal clear, and most amazingly, I was able to UNDERSTAND what everybody was telling me in an environment bombarded by loud music and people. It was incredible, and normally I would NEVER be able to understand what anybody would try to tell me...I would always be saying "WHAT? WHAT? WHAT?". Can anybody here tell me just how Marijuana enables crystal clear clarity to be attained? I know it does not IMPROVE your hearing, only changes your perception of hearing so to speak. Anyways, is there a legitimate medicinal ground for smoking Marijuana exclusively for the medical purpose of helping deaf and hearing impaired people hear and understand voices better, that they could not understand sober? I am not sure if I am unconsciously try to rationalize my growing Marijuana habits on the grounds of "Medicinal justifcations" so to speak. Oh well, it is summer, it helps me hear, and summer is all about social events, so I am going to blaze up! |

| That is very interesting. I have never heard that one before. For me, marijuana helps me focus more on words and my senses so maybe that is why it seems to improve your hearing. I searched Medline using a simple search of keywords "marijuana hearing" and got a bunch of crap but there seem to be some studies looking into this back in the 70's and earlier. Here's the abstract of one. Doesn't prove much but it does lend some support to the idea that people have definitely been looking into this. There were other studies as well but they had no abstract available. Have a great summer. __________________________________________________ _ J Otolaryngol. 1976 Jun;5(3):233-7. Effect of marihuana on hearing. Liedgren SR, Odkvist LM, Davis ER, Fredrickson JM. Marihuana has been said to improve hearing. Two earlier studies have supported this contention. In this investigation, marihuana or placebo cigarettes were randomly smoked by 30 subjects, 15 in each group. Before and after smoking, batteries of standard audiological tests were carried out; pure tone threshold (air and bone conduction), speech reception threshold, speech discrimination at most comfortable level, and relative acoustic impedance measurements including middle ear pressure, stapedial reflexes, compliance, tympanic mobility, and Eustachian tube function. A comparison of pre and post smoking auditory test scores did not demonstrate any significant change in auditory function in the marihuana or placebo group. However, as all subjects had normal hearing and maximum speech discrimination scores pre-smoking, it can only be concluded that smoking marihuana did not worsen the hearing--the experiments were not designed to see whether it would improve hearing. | I cannot say with certainty but, I can offer you this. When I was in my teens, one of my best friends was 100% deaf. And, although I had been partaking for some time, my friend (Mark) had not. After I had the honor of turning him on, and others, to the joys of "Blazin' it up", he looked at me and said; "I can hear you"!!! Believing that he was only super stoned, we all just laughed it off and he never again mentioned it. Later on, his mother was able to purchase him hearing aids and he was sent away to a school for the hearing impaired and I never saw or heard from him again. I hope this is a true medicinal treatment for you and other hearing impaired persons and I would like to say Thank You for reminding my of a very special friend from my childhood. Peace |

| this an extremely interesting claim, i will have to research the causes of impaired hearing as well as the effect of THC in regards to stimulating the senses and/or relieving, reducing or reversing the actual causes of hearing loss. |

| I figure I might as well add to this a couple of things. My right ear has some very minor hearing lose. I can't hear very low sounds at a certain pitch, I notice it but it doesn't affect my life whatsoever. The slight lose of hearing leaves a constant high pitched noise at a low volume in just my right ear aswell. When I smoke, the sound sometimes intensifies and I can hear my heart beat through a vessel in my ear. So marijuana does effect my hearing aswell, but for the better, I'm not sure. I don't want to claim this because the differance is so small, I would need a hearing test to be able to tell. Not one of those hearing tests you might have gotten at a highschool or something, those I pass with ease. Also, when I pick up from one of my "connections", his stuff makes my vision slightly better. This seems to only happen with one of my dealers and his strain. When smoked, my vision is noticably better. I first noticed this on my balcony, I was able pick up details of a tree infront of my house, like creases in the leaves, which from that distance, I could never do before. I can also read small print from a longer distance than when I could if not stoned. We all know marijuana enhances our senses, maybe in more ways than just one. |
