it occurd to me that the paranoia associated with marijuana probably has alot to do with it being illegal.
in my experiance marijuana tends to emphasise feelings and being worried about being caught could easily increase paranoia even if its not about being caught.
any thoughts?

i agree that much of the fear surrounding cannabis and its consumption, etc. relates to a paranoia of getting caught or taken to jail. good topic.

I think it goes deeper than that. Because statisticly you probably won't ever be arrested for smoking marijuana, especialy if your white.

My theory is that marijuana acts as an intensifier. If you have an active central nervous system, it acts as a stimulant. If your nervous system is running below par, you will experience a depressant effect. (both can be effected by different types of canabanoid groups in different strains)

Moreover, marijuana amplifies stimuli. Sights, sounds, and feeling can be experienced more richly.

Along that line I think paranoia comes as a result from an amplified fear that normaly wouldn't be considerd.

Remember paranoia is a fear that is unbased in fact.

For me, the illegality isnt really what does it. I mean sure i just don't go walking around flaunting my marijuana, but in my city at least, nobody gets busted for it. The paranoia in me is actually my parents catching me and punishing me, not the law. I mean the law can screw you over and all, but my parents can sure do a number on you mentally.

i didnt really think to about parents considering mine are cool with it.
in fact ive got a plant out back aswell, so long as it aint criminal my mom doesnt care (in south australia it insnt criminal to have one plant (use to be able to have 3 until recently)

I think it not really about going to jail, but getting cought by anyone, cops,your mom,friends, people you dont know... I had only one major paranoia attack. It felt like i was going to die. If you are having a paranoia attack take a few deep breaths and relax man. But dont relax too much a little paranoia is always good, it has saved me from being busted.

I'm not really that paranoid, but I like being around people that are because it makes me more cautious.

My paranoia comes 100% from fear of getting busted. But, I've been working on it and am getting better...

For me it's always been cops, i'm just paranoid when i see one usually. One time, we were smoking at my friends house, and some of my nonsmoking friends thought it would be funny to scare me. They got one of those blue lights that kinda looks like a cops light (cops in my city have all-blue lights) and after we got stoned some of them put it outside my friends window and turned it on. One of them went up to me and was like "DUDE! its the cops!" I think thats the most paranoid I've ever been. I took my stash and hid it in his parents room (i still dont know why) and started running around and just going insane. Then about a minute later they told me that it wasn't really the cops, and they almost got beaten ok so i'm not a strong guy, but i was pretty mad.
