And I just found out, the hard way...


I was in Michigan over Christmas&New Years visiting the In-Laws. I had to go get new glasses, mine were broke.

Went to the optitian had a complete exam. The only problem that he told me is that I have elevated IOPs (the pressure in the eyes), but it should just be something that I should check out every year or so. No problem. No worries... I had smoked a little earlier...

I got back home and noticed that my glasses weren't quite "right" and I also wanted to get contacts so I saw another eye doctor and had another exam.

I had higher IOP levels compared to the exam I had 3 weeks prior. The doctor also said that I had some "cupping" on my optic nerves and immediatly made an appointment for me to a specialist for glaucoma. No Problem... No worries... I had smoked a little earlier...

Here is my point. Me smoking earlier in the day had made my IOP levels lower and if I had smoked any more, the symtom of elevated IOP levels may have been missed.

As it is right now, because I smoked prior to my exams, the doctor does not know my "true" IOP levels.

I go in on thursday (very sober) and come clean to me having smoked on the previous exam day and ask to have my pressure checked again.

On the bright side, If I am diagnosed with glaucoma (doubtful) the odds are that over the past few years, smoking has probably been helpful to the health of my eyes.
