Hello, i am a 15 yr old high school student who just started smoking weed for recreational uses. I also, have a small amount of depression, but have suffered from restless leg syndrom for the last few years. I am currently taking Concerta for adhd in school, and it helps my RLS. I just got prescribed wellbutrin last week, and havent taken only one pill, the first day. Since i heard about possible interactions with weed. Today, 420, i smoked weed for the first time, ( 6 hits ) while taking conserta, and a bit of wellbutrin,( in the morning for school, not for any other reason.) and was trippin out, unlike my friends who smoked even more. My question is, will taking wellbutrin ( and maybie concerta) and smoking weed ( maybie once a weekend ) effect me, or have any interactions? I was told by my doctor, not to smoke or do any drugs while on this medicine, but want to smoke recreationaly anywase. thanks.

Hi, For only 15 years old, hon, you are on a mess of meds. I'd advocate getting off as many as you and your physician feel comfortable. I'd also be very honest with him about what you take recreationally and how it makes you feel. If you don't have a good relationship with him/her, then change physicians. You can also talk to your pharmacist. They are still bound by confidentiality agreements and as a general rule, they keep more current on trends, news, research, and problems with both legal prescriptions and street "drugs." Research all of your meds, including the drugs you take recreationally and the ones that you use that are "over the counter" products such as aspirin, ibuprofen, etc. Find out as much as you can on the conditions that you have been diagnosed with. What are the current trends in research? What have other people with your conditions experienced when taking the same drugs? You are your own best advocate for your health care. At 15, it may seem like a big step to take responsibility for your health, both mental and physical, but you are already savvy enough to come here and post your questions, so I suspect you have a head start on handling what will be a life-long issue: your health. Just a quick note on Wellbutrin. I saw that someone had posted that it is an SSRI. Technically it blocks re-uptake on dopamine, seratonin, and norepinephrine, with it's main work being done on the dopamine centers. What does this mean? A few things. Wellbutrin is an old-line anti-depressant. It has had a comeback in the past few years as a drug of choice for aiding smoking cessation. This is in large part because of it's ability to so strongly affect the dopamine levels in the brain. The combination of drugs you are taking so far in your life are very powerful. It's important to realize that these meds must be taken properly, consistently, and at the same time every day in order to be effective. Some drugs can cause erratic mood behavior when taken improperly and this can be a real pain. The good news is that marijuana has been used to treat mild-to-moderate depression in the past. Check out the NORML site or the Drug Policy Alliance to see articles and research on its efficacy. Anecdotally you will hear many people talk about how mj has helped their depression. Good luck, Sukhavati

My family has a history or dementia, bi-polar, and manic depression. I was prescribed Welbutrin SR a few years back. For me, This drug enhanced my problems. It gave me muscle spasms at night when trying to sleep and small ticks in the day. It also is partly responsible for my cousins suicide at 22 years old. Among other drugs he was being prescribed. Please forgive in inability to write lengthy posts in my replies. I do not type fast so I type what is needed. I assure you that what is written is considered more than once. To be honest Welbutrin is a touchy subject for me. But, like the person who posted above me. Take As little drugs as you can to get by safely. Some who dont use enough caution and common sense end up in worse off situations. Take it easy brotha.

1 more thing. For me...Herb was All I need to aid my depression and allow me to lead a pretty normal life up to date. Research Yourself before you even think of researching new drugs to take...especially synthetic ones. Know what goin on up there. And we all know how hard that is, if not impossible at 15. Just be safe with all the things you do in life. Know that you are smart for realizing that you have problems that need attention. Remember that you getting close to the point in your life where you will set your permanent ways. Or it was for me. So tread lightly. Be Safe man. Adios.

Hi, A quick addendum. It's said the road to hell is paved in good intentions. The people who surround you--friends, family and your healthcare team, want the best for you. They will attempt to bring what is different, what is out of their field of view, into a range of normality without realizing that different does not equate necessarily to wrong. At 15 you are caught up in a world that is only partially of your making. In other words, the diseases you are diagnosed with today are likely partially caused or exacerbated by the living situation you find yourself in. Depression can be environmental, and parents and docs, working under the best intentions, can serve to make it just a little worse and a little lonelier. So don't buy that your illnesses today will be with you all your life. It's quite possible that when you are in a different environment and on a healthier path medicinally that your life will be revealed as something intricately beautiful, painful and all yours. You are not a label. You are not a disease. You are not a poster child for anything other than your own unique self. This is not to say that diseases don't exist and have a very biological basis. They do. Depression is very dangerous and it needs to be treated professionally and with a very honest relationship with a good doctor. Finding the good doc is the trouble. Meanwhile, keep talking and keep learning. I found that MJ relieved the deep fatigue that I often felt as a precursor to the dark times. Sukhavati

hello, I'm new to these boards so I'll try to share a little. I just recently (1-2 months ago) finished my six month stint on 100 mg wellbutrin for a light-moderate depression. I also take 10mg of adderall for help with my college load. The only issues i had when i smoked was, after awhile, the highs never seem to get as high as before i was on the meds. Since i've been taken off I've been able to enjoy pot (and alchohol, for that matter) much more than before. I would agree with the previous posters: being on several meds at once sucks, plain and simple. I willed myself to get off of wellbutrin six months ahead of schedule (as i heard that six months is the shortest amount of time you should have before weaning yourself off). It was a godsend the first few weeks, but after you hit "that point", i didnt notice any difference, ya know? Something to keep in mind...

All I can speak of is my personal experiences with Wellbutrin. Almost a year ago, I was but on Wellbutrin to help me quit smoking. i took 300mgs daily, 150 in the AM, 150 in the PM. I also smoked marijuana steadily through this time. I didn't notice any different effects in the 1.5 months I took wellbutrin. I also have been smoke free since June 7th of last year (tobacco smoke, that is)
