| So here's the basics: my MD signed my medical marijuana application, and it's been sent in, etc, etc, etc. My company does not do urinalysis testing and is actually pretty stoner friendly [tech support company, 24/7 facility in the pacific northwest]. I, however, work in a more or less supervisory capacity as a data analyst for workforce management. My immediate supervisor is cool, and he's in the know on most of my little quirks and issues... his concern is liability, always, and there really isn't much in this situation. NOW we get to the question... when I actually get my card, should I tell HR?

| Well, there really isn't a reason to tell him... I mean, if you were prescribed another drug by your doctor because of an illness, would you tell your boss then? And if you do tell him, its perfectly legal, so there shouldn't be a problem that way either... unless you plan on smoking at work, I don't see a reason for you to tell your boss. |

| Nah, I don't plan to smoke at work, but I am worried about limiting my liability where HR is concerned... I don't want to end up in one of those 'well, if you had told us sooner...' situations. On the other hand, I'm so completely paranoid [nope, not the pot, just a side effect of working in corporate America] about HR issues in general... I'm just clueless about whether or not I should let them know... |

the only reason I would tell the company about using mediucal marijuana was if my illness would protect me under the America W. dsabiity Act...this would give yous ome protection from you company..I don't know what you illness is but you dr shoudl be able to tell you aobut the ADA... Good Luck ![]()

| well, since ur cool with ur direct supervisor - i would ask him what if any reprecussions there were for not letting the HR know... and also, just ask him what he would do in ur situation, outside influence from a trusted coworker will help to stimulate a better decision IMO

| Well, and this is part of what's peculiar - my department is in the middle of a 'change of command'. Both my old boss, and my new boss are cool with me and my assorted quirks - but the new guy wanted to know right away if HR was in the know, and seemed uncomfortable with the fact that to date they have not been. There have been a lot of layoffs this past month, even a couple in my department. I shouldn't be at risk, since by all accounts [verbally and written in my reviews] I am the most productive staff member in the department, and I'm not yet the most expensive... but I am concerned. I'm disinclined to buck the new guy on something this simple, but bringing HR up to speed could just put me on their 'we could do without this' list. At this point I am not inclined to bring my marijuana use to HR's attention, but this is a huge company, that [allegedly] values diversity, etc - and does actually have a very large population of employees with various 'alternative lifestyles'... so maybe it wouldn't be a big deal? |

| I certainly wouldn't mention it. I doubt any good would come from it. If they drug test for it, I most certainly wouldn't mention it. I wouldn't discuss my 'illnesses' (after all, that's what this medicine is about, right?) with my employer any more than was absolutely necessary. Treat it like your other illnesses. The only time you should be bringing it up is if they ask why you failed a drug test. |

| This company doesn't drug test, so the fear of failing a drug test isn't an issue, anyway. My direct supervisor is already in the know about my 'illness' since I am using cannabis to assist in treatment of a 'mood disorder' that impacts my behavior at work occasionally. I appreciate all the feedback, thanks everybody. Right about now I am leaning toward leaving HR out of it, and continuing to keep my manager informed as this has worked nicely for several years. |

| about it comming up later. My husband works in a factory, and I'm always afraid he's going to get seriously hurt, but his mj would stop any workmans comp or disability payments dead in their tracks. I would also want to purchase life insurance, as I am not working and we have 2 kids, but again, mj would void any insurance for him. It's a sh*tty position we are in. We are responsible with our use, yet it closes so many doors for us. Have you thought about asking a lawyer? You can definetly talk to your dr. or ask HR for specific info regarding any medical, disability, or insurance policies. Just a suggestion. Sounds like a cool job though! ![]()
