Default Building Muscle

Yeah I know there are a couple threads on this already, but none of those thread starters really hit any of the questions I've been having. Here's the scenario: I'm a 17 year old in HS and not really all that active, but I'm for some reason really skinny. I'm not sure why, since I never really eat healthy (or at least make any conscious effort to) and with the level of activity, I probably should be a fat cow. But that's not the case at all. I don't know if I have a really high metabolism, or what. So given that, does anybody have any advice on how to adjust my diet to benefit gaining muscle? Basically I'm looking to improve upper body only; fill out my shoulders a little, and increase my forearm/bicep/etc., and that's really it. I'm just worried I'm one of those people who can never gain weight no matter what they do, be it fat or muscle.

Also, what about actually working out? I'm pretty clueless on what a good routine would be, so basically I've been doing anywhere from 5-7 sets of 20 pushups throughout the day in addition to some pulldowns on the weight machine downtairs, usually doing burnout sets. Given what I'm looking to do, any ideas on the most efficient ways to do it? And you don't have to worry about giving me the psychology speech, I know you have to want it badly, and I definitely do. I have for years and for some reason am only now seeming to make a serious effort to do it. Appreciate any advice from anyone.. thanks

For me, working out at home dosent work, thats how I started too, with a Weider 8630....The best advice I could give you is join a gym, and go as often as you possibly can. Once at the gym, find machienes that make you sore in the right places and use em. It's not all that hard, but EVERYONE does it differntly. If you have a friend that works out, that can be really helpful, bc 1) he can show you his regimin to help you decide what you wanyt for yours and 2) people usually lift longer and harder if they are with someone. Good luck! Being buff is fun, and facilitaes EVERYTHING in life, but you got to WANT it. With our habit, its a LOT harder for me to get and stay buff, and I've slipped a little, but thats just cause I want it less. If you want it bad enough, its yours.

You want to buff up, so go for heavier weights, it really doesn't matter if you can only do five reps at first just so long as you get really sore. It's all about getting sore and tearing up the muscle to encourage it to grow more. And I would recomend burnout sets on everything you do, just keep doing it until you can't and your muscles feel like jello. Ahh, that's such a good feeling. Also, I'd say more important than how you work out is how often. Not that you need to do it too often,(my old trainer said that it's best to wait a couple of days between work outs for skinny people like me) but more or less being on a set schedule is the important thing. Just don't vary from your schedule too often, make it burn like fire, and keep going till ya can't go.

For your diet, you should get as much protien as you possibly can. Sushi has incredible amounts of protien, one bite has more than a whole steak. Also if you're not disgusted by the idea, which most people are, tofu has tons of protien as well. Personally I love tofu, it's actually really good when it's cooked right. I like chopping up some of it along with some apples, and throwing them onto a frying pan and letting the juices get nice and mixed. It tastes sooooo good. Another idea for lots of protien is that carnation instant breakfast stuff, it's got a lot of it. And if you're really serious you can go to one of those General Nutrition Centers, where they sell all sorts of protien drinks and pills. If you're obsessive you can drink raw egg smoothies.

dont eat egg smoothies, my friend used to drink 14 egg whites daily, he reeked eggs. You dont want that man, it scares the people away, besides its nasty as hell!

Join a gym working out in your house wont take you anywhere.

and as my gym instructor says "If you are born a gecko your are never turning into a crocodille"
think about that

dont do sets of pushups. build up to being able to do 50 pushups at a time, and do them twice a day, builds yer arms very nicely. for at hoem workouts, pushups, pullups, situps, and dips will work your upper body very well, and you dont need weights.

Oyeah as far as Routines, If you cant afford a gym, get a book geared towards "hardgainers". That's what you are (me too). Whats cool about that is once you do get big (patience) youll be cut already. Get professional advice, some moves can be dangerous, (overhead dumbells to exhaustion comes to mind).
Generally,Big moves with big weights= Big Shirt

Drink lots of water! I know, water is like liquid nothing but thats what makes it good. I mean if you drink really sugary things like soda than the sugar is going to be deposited as fat eventually. With water at least its clensing your body and not leaving anything behind. you kight actually be able to move longer/faster/harder if you keep your body well hydrated. Plus it helps you skin. I use to be a dance teacher and I never let my kids drink anything but water or mineral water. I feel like I'm preaching you here, sorry but I'm a health nut! Oh and one more thing keep whatever routine you choose consistant! If you get your body use to a plan of calorie buring and pressure your muscles should expand. Good luck!!
