| http://www.cannabis.net/misc/parkinsons.html Potential role of cannabinoids in Parkinson's disease by Sevcik J, Masek K Institute of Pharmacology, Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, Prague. sevcik@biomed.cas.cz Drugs Aging 2000 Jun; 16(6): 391-5 ABSTRACT Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by a progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons of the substantia nigra, resulting from an oxidative stress. The lack of dopaminergic neurons is reflected by a disturbed balance of the neural circuitry in the basal ganglia. Cannabinoids might alleviate some parkinsonian symptoms by their remarkable receptor-mediated modulatory action in the basal ganglia output nuclei. Moreover, it was recently observed that some cannabinoids are potent antioxidants that can protect neurons from death even without cannabinoid receptor activation. It seems that cannabinoids could delay or even stop progressive degeneration of brain dopaminergic systems, a process for which there is presently no prevention. In combination with currently used drugs, cannabinoids might represent, qualitatively, a new approach to the treatment of PD, making it more effective. Information from Mama Budz: Recent studies have shown that cannabinoids, the chemical compounds found in canaabis (marijuana) are strong antioxidants ~ the strongest in nature and stronger than can be currently created in a lab ~. Their anti oxidant properties, especially in brain tissue have been shown to rapidly diminish the the damage cause by free-radicals and oxidation of the brain tissue (such as after a stroke) which is in fact what causes the brain cells to die (cell necrosis). If this is in fact so, as it seems to be from a lot of testing going on in Italy and Israel and Belgium, not only does Marijuana not kill brain cells, it might actually be a protectant. As inhaling burning plant matter is containdicated especially in a person with a lowered immune system, I would suggest taking in the cannabis by mouth either through "brownies" or through a tea infusion. Keep us informed... Hugz Mama Budz | |

| Mama Budz, Thank you so very much for the information! We are compiling information to take to the doc and see what happens. He has given it a try and it helps him relax but we have to do this legally. I'll keep you informed on the process from time to time if you'd like. You have really helped and my husband and I appreciate it. God Bless! CeeCee | |
