Default I've read all the myths. but...

I'm looking for information on what marijuana DOES do.

I figured the best place for that info is here rather than a govt. site or something like that.

I've seen lots of pages that debunk the myths, so I want facts about what pot does, not what it doesn't do.

So what negatives come out of smoking pot?

Short term?

Red eyes, hunger, problems with short term memory, dry mouth..
all of which go away after being stoned.

Long term?
Nothing really. maybe your lungs "wont work as well" when you're pushing yourself hard and such, but the resin from cannabis isn't carcinogenic, so there's no chance for getting lung cancer or anything. Eventually your lungs will flush it out (if you abstain from it long enough).

Some people speak of amotivational syndrome (fancy way of saying someone is "lazy")... but i dont think that's really true, many people actually are inclined to do more after they start smoking pot. It's personality, not a drug which causes this.

Other than that, there's really nothing. It has no long term problems, nor any addiction problems or anything. That's why the legalization debate is always such a hot topic.

I don't know if this falls into the catagory of mental addiction, but when I smoke everyday for a while and then stop for a week or so. It is very hard to go to sleep for the first night or two of not smoking. Sometimes I'll lay awake in my bed untill 5 or 6 am before I finally go to sleep. But by the third night I have no problem falling asleep without pot.

It's not great for your lungs to inhale smoke.

Other than that, there have been mixed reports about addiction. I think they're pretty much garbage. It's not physically addictive. Can you become mentally addicted? Perhaps, but I think these are the same people who would say they are addicted to chocolate, sex, or television.

I have started and stopped smoking SEVERAL times with no noticeable effect. I could easily go longer without weed than I could without sex or chocolate. So I would say that people who are 'addicted' to weed are probably using it to fill a hole in their life.

Oh, one more thing... don't believe the hype about all the people checking into getting treatment for their marijuana 'problem.' I think a quick check will show that the vast majority are getting 'treated' to avoid criminal charges.

Taken from Erowid:

Quote:
Negative effects can include paranoia, dry mouth, respiratory problems and nervousness/racing heart. Other effects may be negative or inconvenient in certain settings or situations including reduced ability to concentrate, impaired memory, tiredness, and confusion. Side effects tend to increase with lifetime use: as users age, they often report the anxiety-producing and uncomfortable effects increase and the euphoria decreases.
Quote:
The most common negative health impact of regular cannabis smoking are lung and throat problems including: coughing, increased frequency of throat and lung infections, and reduced lung capacity. There are concerns about possible long term carcinogenic (cancer causing) effects of cannabis smoking, but the results are still somewhat controversial. It can be safely said, however, that health risks increase with frequency and duration of smoking anything.
After 23 years of smoking (majority of it wake and bake and on.) I can pretty much vouch for feeling every side effect at least once.
Everyone reacts differently, I don't believe you can become physically addicted, but I do have physical withdrawal the first 3 or 4 days of stopping and that can worry you that it is addictive. Light smokers I know don't have that side effect.

Can I ask why you only ask for the negative side effects? Are you familiar with the positive?

Peace,
Plains

Im not really firmiliar with marijuana at all. I was involved in a discussion recently where people were debating over the negatives of smoking pot. I heard lots of stuff that sounded true and lots that sounded rediculous. So I just wanted to get a more educated view.

And yes, I've read about the positives. Info on the positives of marijuana are easy to find. But when I searched around for the negatives on (non-government) websites like this one, all I could find were articles that say what doesn't happen. I was looking for negatives that do happen.

Thanks again for the help.

from personal experience, i've found that short term memory loss only happens either while your high, or if you toke up alot, and for like 2 or 3 days consecutively, you'll be forgetfull for like half a week. only negatives i've found, except for a little paranoa while high. but when i say a little, i really mean a little.

Paranoia is far from a negative effect!!! It's fun! Like watching a horror flick...

There actually are some negatives yet to be mentioned though. Smoking pot can (from my own qualatative obsevations) increase one's ability to reason abstractly. This often increases one's... philisophical awareness. Which often leads to some very scary conclusions about life and people.

90% of philosohpers in recent years have either gone insane or committed suicide. Or crashed their car. Stupid boy... you should have watched where you were going.
