WELLBUTRIN & MARIJUANA

Wellbutrin is used to treat:
Depression
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Bupropion Hydrochloride is also prescribed to help people quit smoking. In this version, it is called Zyban .

Zyban and Wellbutrin are the same exact medication, Bupropion Hydrochloride, but are marketed differently. The doses used are different also because Wellbutrin is used to treat depression and ADHD, and Zyban is used for smoking cessation.

How it works:

Wellbutrin works by increasing the levels of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain, thereby relieving the symptoms of depression.

Possible side effects of Wellbutrin:

The following list may not contain all the side effects associated with this medication:

Most common side effects weight loss, insomnia, nervousness, fever, headache, chills, seizures, constipation, rash, blurred vision, excitement, loss of apetite,
Infrequent side effects agitation, constipation, dry mouth, nausea, increased libido, skin problems, tremors, nightmares, excessive sweating
Rare side effects/Risks hypomania, fainting, seizures, tinnitus, white blood cell decrease


Before you begin this medication, consult your doctor:
If you have a history of seizures.
If you have thoughts of death or suicide.

Possible drug interactions:

Remember, always follow your physician's recommendations on how to take your medication. Also, if you are taking any herbal remedies, vitamins, and/or over-the-counter medications, be sure to tell your physician. The following section offers some, but not necessarily all, the possible drug interactions.

MAO inhibitors
Levadopa
major tranquilizers such as Thorazine
other antidepressants
Tagamet
Tegretol
phenobarbital

If you think you may have taken an ovedose of Wellbutrin, go to the emergency room or seek other medical attention immediately!

Storage:

This medication should be kept in a cool dry area, away from extreme heat or moisture.

Other Important Information:

If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the potential risks of this or any medication with your doctor.

If you take Wellbutrin, you may be more vulnerable to seizures if your dosage is too high, have suffered brain damage, or have had seizures before.

Many patients experience a period of increased restlessness, especially when first taking the drug. This may take the form of agitation, insomnia, and anxiety.

Never share your medications with others
Only use this medication as your doctor has prescribed

thanks mama! i think info like that could really help people on these boards. if they have a hard time finding the search button at the top of the page, there's no way the same people could do a little research to find that.

i was on busparone (sp?) for a while because of anxiety before i started smoking, but decided to get off of it and rely on marijuana to relax me instead of that pill. i had a gut feeling i should decide on either one or the other and not do both; i'm glad i did. if they both affect chemical balances in the brain, i don't want a battle going on between the two up in my head. it's always safer to...well, be safe.

in addition to this, for those who don't know, you can go to webmd.com and look up just about any medication and it will tell you most everything about that drug including known interactions. smoke safely!

Glad to put up the information...

Buspar is a different medication then Wellbutrin.

I have found no drug interaction between Buspar and cannabis and as that is a medication I take I do keep an eye on that one rather closely.

No information why this may occur and to what extent was not defined.

Personal theory is that since Wellbutrin acts on a set of neuro transmitters ~ dopamine (too much of which gives shizoaffective behaviors, too little causes parkinsonian behaviors) and epinephrine whic is biological speed ~ that when out of wack in slightly is bad... Marijuana's lense will intensify other medications so I can see the feasibility of marijuana intensifying the medically induced psychosis caused by the medication.

Damn, thanks Mama and Vaya! I'm on Wellbutrin and what you wrote explains alot.

I began having nightmares about 6 months ago and they kept me from sleeping through the night many times. Whoa I gotta run. I'll write more later. Thanks

Argh. This is horrible to find out. I just started wellbutrin yesterday. I thought this would be 'the' medication. It would help me quit smoking, works great for a family member of mine, and wouldn't make me gain weight.

I have read up on the medication and all it says about marijuana is do not mix. One sentence. What I don't understand is when I was percribed this I had a drawn out disscusion on marijuana use, was asked to take a drug screen and refused. I asked specificly for this medication and she said she had no problem giving it to me. She said nothing at all about smoking while on this medication. I would have thought that if this were something to seriously avoid she would have talked to me about it.

In the past I've smoked while on every medication, with no bad results. I did recently have a panic attatck, but I hadn't been taking any pills for days which I figure would be the reason why.

Well thank you for doing the research, I will definitly put some thought into it before smoking again.
