Question antidepressants and pot

Is there any danger or side effects in taking SSRI's and smoking pot? I am supposed to be going back on my zoloft and was wondering if it will kill me...

Thanks!

geisha

epending on how old you are.,........ask your doctor, and see what they say.....when taking any med that messes with brain chemicals as does weed, your doc should know.....and depending on your age, they cannot tell your parents....PM mamabudz, she will be able to give you a more intelligent answer, and maybe even a cookie

Hey Geisha...according to the most recent studies, Zoloft and marijuana will not kill you.

NOTE: There has been reported an increased possibility of psychotic behavior by those who take Wellbutrin (aka Zyban used for smoking cessation programs ) and pot. This has alos been noticed in other anti depressants that effect the norepinephrine and dopamine systems as opposed to Zoloft, Paxil and Prozac which effect the serotonin system.

Zoloft however is not necessarily the best choice for young women however as SSRI anti depressants are concerned --- Zoloft tends to lower the thyroid function of women (a side effect that can be tracked by taking a base line cholestrol screening and monitoring the cholestrol level over time while on the medication -- Cholestrol will increase as the thyrod function is affected, even if thyroid testing shows normal function of the thyroid)

Discuss with your doctor the alternatives of Prozac or Paxil as other SSRI anti depressants.

As for marijuana while on anti depresssants, I always advise that you remain pot free for the initial 4 to 6 weeks of therapy so you and your health care professional can settle on a proper therapeutic dose of anti-depressant medication without the influence of the the short term euphoric effects of marijuana effecting the analysis of your treatment.

Marijuana can be effective short term anti-depressant treatment for acute depressive episodes...for example it can be used by people suffering a severe debiltating sudden depressive state such as experienced by those with bi-polar depression which can lead to suicidal ideation. But marijuana's effects last for perhaps an hour or two at the most.

If you suffer such severe depression you should be in touch with your mental health care professional to discuss additional long term treatment options including but not limited to other medication agents.

...oh yeah...and have a cookie

Thumbs up

I have been on Zoloft for a few years now. I started smoking after being diagnosed with depression, so I was already on the medication. I haven't had any bad side effects related to my Zoloft. I have stomach issues but that is more the pot. The good thing for me is that Zoloft makes me not hungry, but I smoke up and eat regularly.
