Default Miami: Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert

MEDICAL MARIJUANA BENEFIT CONCERT
AT TOBACCO ROAD
HOSTED BY
PLOPPY PALACE PRODUCTIONS

On Saturday, January 25, 2003 Ploppy Palace Productions and Tobacco Road will be hosting a concert to raise funds for Coalition Advocating Medical Marijuana's citizens initiative campaign. As part of this four stage extravaganza, some of South Florida's top bands, spoken word artists and community activists will join together for patients’ and physicians’ right to use medical cannabis.

As a testament to the diversity of supporters for this cause, there will be broad variety of musical styles including jazz, rock, reggae, folk, vocal harmonies, Peruvian, hip-hop, Latin, funk, experimental, heavy metal, tribal rhythms, Renaissance, world beat fusion and psychedelic grooves.

Jerrods Door, The Wicked Screaming Squirts, Out OfThe Anonymous, The Day Music Died, Little Atlas, Kuyayky, Haze, Mumbo Jumbo, Edward The Bear, Sweetbone, The Square Egg, Robert Baldwin, New Relics, Jayne Margo-Reby, Charissa Johnson, Jean P. Jams, The Tribe, Multi-Culture Ink, Generica, En Caravana, Dinosaur Construction Unit, Pale Blue Dot, Pete Masitti, Seomine, Swivel Stick, Val C. Wisecracker, Inner Voice, The Oski Foundation, The Avenging Lawnmowers Of Justice, Boxelder and Earth Citizens will be performing original music.

Alonso, Richard Negri, Melkisedek and Andrio Chavarro will be presenting innovative spoken word and theatric pieces.

Feiruz Asaad’s Belly Dance Troupe will be performing middle eastern dances to live percussion rhythms.

Michael Dubiner will be presenting a photographic series from the 2000 election.

Toni Latino from the Coalition Advocating Medical Marijuana will be speaking about the voter initiative to allow physicians to prescribe marijuana for patients in need. Other speakers will include Chris Conrad and Mikki Norris, authors and activists from California, Jodi James, Executive Director of the Florida Cannabis Action Network, Elvy Musikka and Irvin Rosenfeld, medical marijuana patients, Scott Bledsoe, from the Jacksonville Cannabis Action Network, David McKinney, from the Students For Sensible Drug Policy. In addition, representatives from the Florida Green Party, the Libertarian Party of Florida, the ACLU of Florida and members of Miami NORML will be addressing public policy issues.

The event will work to raise funds and awareness for the medical marijuana campaign and patients’ rights. Previously, a person's right to use medical necessity as a defense to marijuana charges has been upheld by several appeals courts in Florida. Marijuana has proven therapeutically useful in treating numerous medical conditions including muscle spasticity, arthritis, and the nausea related to AIDS and cancer chemotherapy. For physician-certified medicinal users and their caregivers this initiative will provide protection from legal prosecution. About 500,000 Florida registered voters need to sign the petition in order for the electorate to decide on the issue in the next election. This process is similar to the initiatives passed in elections from seven states that allowed doctors to prescribe cannabis to patients.

In addition there will be vendors, artists and small businesses including The Wallflower Gallery, Hemp Nut, Peace On Eden, Kind Street, Mystic Mango.com, Brickell Village News, Al Crespo and Aeric Moskowitz promoting and selling their merchandise.

The Medical Marijuana Benefit Concert is sponsored by Ploppy Palace Productions, Tobacco Road, Florida NORML, The Yummiest.com and selected businesses.

Members of the recently formed Miami NORML will be on hand to assist in the petition drive.

Saturday, January 25 from 4:00 p.m. – 3:00 a.m.
Tobacco Road, 626 South Miami Ave., Brickell

Gee, that's the spirit!

Actually Jeb is so desperate for money, taxing a new agricultural product and increasing revenue might seem quite a good idea right now...
