Default A Question.

I started smoking weed about 3 years ago and I was on it strong. For last year I haven't really smoked all that much because for some reason my heart has been beating very fast and I didn't noticed that when I first started smoking weed those for those first two years. Like for the first 30 minutes it beats rapidly then it starts to go down.

But why is my heart beating fast now? Has it been doing all along and I really didin't notice it?If I know it does beat fast whenever I smoke, so I know it's not in my mind. If I lay down to try to make slow down and like get up to do something it starts beating even faster.

Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

Last night I was having a real difficult time and I only hit the blunt like twice. I'm thiking leaving the weed alone.

TXHerb_Smoker, I may be wrong but that sounds sort of like general anxiety disorder.

I don't know for sure but i do know that marijuana in some people causes panic attacks.
Hope you figure it out, good luck.

Well after reading many stories I've found out that a punding heart after smoking is an normal effect. I guess if I start back smoking on a regular basis then my body will get used to it. Maybe I'm too 'noid' cause even before I smoke it I know my heart is going to be pounding. I've had a heart test in May of 2002 and my heart is in great shape.

You can't have a heart attack from smoking only weed can you? I know if it's laced you can.

I have many years medical experience. Your symptoms sound like anxiety or a mild panic attack.
Sometimes the body "flips into" this panic reaction even though emotionally you feel well balanced. Sufferers report symptoms of pounding heart, tingling in the extremeties, feeling as if the throat is tightening and closing off, chest pains, difficulty breathing or hyperventilating with dizziness and a feeling of faint.

Generally the answer is to have a well practiced relaxing regime, medications have little to offer. The environemtn should be completely safe and risk-free, chilling music and concentrating on controlled and slow deep breathing.

Are you under much stress at the moment??

It may be a good idea to kick the weed for the time being.

Marijuana speeding up the heartbeat is not a concern for people who have no heart condition and are healthy.

Users can build up a tolerance to this, meaning that the heart beat doesn't increase as much as it used to, or it could become totally unaffected by marijuana (normal heart beat).

From www.cannabis-med.org
Quote:
The overall effect of cannabis use on the frequency of heart attacks is unknown. This can only be ascertained in longitidudinal epidemiological studies. There are some studies and case reports that support the assumption that cannabis use may be harmful in people with coronary disease and may trigger a heart attack. However, this seems to be a very rare event. Cannabis will not cause a heart attack in a healthy person.
There are some pharmacological effects of cannabis that may act preventive and some that may be damaging.
Factors that may be damaging:
- The decrease of oxygen delivery to the heart (only if cannabis is smoked), due to the production of carbon monoxide.
- The increase of heart rate of about 45% on average in the first hour after smoking. Thus a normal heart rate of 70 may increase to about 100. This increases labour and thus oxygen demand (or oxygen need) of the heart muscle.
- Changes of blood pressure. Cannabis may cause the blood pressure to increase when the person is lying down, and to decrease when the person stands up.
Factors that might be preventive:
- If the angina is based on a spastic contraction of the coronary arteries, cannabis may relax the spasm.
- Cannabinoids reduce platelet aggregation, thus they may reduce the tendency of the blood to form clots.
- Cannabinoids act anti-inflammatory. Inflammation measured as the level of CRP is associated with a higher risk of heart attack.
In coronary disease the heart attack risk of cannabis use may be as high as going for a walk or having sex. So if you feel chest pain while walking or if you know that you have a severe coronary disease you should better not take cannabis or only in low doses that do not significantly increase heart rate. These low doses are often high enough for the therapeutic effectiveness of cannabis. You can measure your heart rate yourself and find out how it changes in reaction to cannabis. In case of an accidential overdose you can prevent the increase of heart rate by taking a beta-blocker.
If anyone has a heart condition, they better be careful.

TXHerb_Smoker, when you lay down and then suddenly get up, your blood pressure can change. This may be the culprit for why your heart started beating at a different rate when you stood up.

Well like I said, I went and got an EGK in 2002 of May and they said my heart was in great shape. I'm thinking about getting another one when I turn 21(May 1st) just to make sure my heart is still in good shape.

The doctors suggested it was only gas when I last went to the doctor.
