| I'm 21. I've been depressed since I was 12. I didn't "really" discover marijuana until a year ago. I had smoked it a few times before but nothing special. Last year I started smoking it and my depression vanished when I high and I really liked that. Marijuana allows me to "feel" things. I can listen to music and totally understand whats going on. It just makes me feel good. I can talk to my friends and understand their "feelings". Sober, I don't have feelings at all. It f'in blows. Sometimes I feel like a robot. I know there are a good number of pscyhoactive chemicals in marijuana. I wish scientists knew what each one of them did. I wish I could someone filter out the ones that make me feel "alive" and get rid of the ones that make you into that stupor when your high. I don't mind the high, but your just too out of it to do much. I wish for too much I think. However, I'm pretty smart myself. Maybe I could figure it out in a lab somewhere, to better humanity! I am getting a molecular and cellular biology major! Right now, I'm trying to survive with Rhodiola and St. John's Wort. I feel good on them, but I like the effects of Marijuana. I've taken Paxil before, and I can remember feeling really good for a looooong time. But then it stopped having the same effects. I think this would be the case with marijuana too. The other problem with marijuana, is the short half life. You only feel good for a little bit of time, then you have to smoke some more. Because of the negative impact of marijuana, I don't use it. I want to though. I guess using marijuana might be bad for you, but who ever said depression was good for you?? on a side note, has anyone used that portable vaporizer that they've been advertising on here? If i ever did start smoking again, I would use that. Cuz I'm a health freak and I don't like putting smoke in my lungs. p'z |

| Hi soar2thaclouds ![]() Have you tried counseling? Experiments have found that the short term effects of antidepressant drugs are effective, but in the long-term, after the person stops taking the drug, it sucks. They find that they can fall back into their depression. Counseling shows good long term effects; I'm guessing because the person is trying to deal with the depression, find the cause, etc.. Drugs just temporarily cover up the effects of depression, for a period of time (as you have found out first hand with marijuana and Paxil). In some cases, therapy and antidepressant drugs can be an effective combination. Yes, smoking is unhealthy. You could try a different method, such as a tincture. No smoking involved in that.

| Have you been diagnosed with anything other than depression? Did they try to switch you off of paxil to another script? I personally know 2 people (F) who have had depression and were prescribed paxil, it worked for both of them then it stopped working so they were switched to other pharms and finally zoloft which ended up working long term. I have also smoked marijuana with both of these individuals and after smoking marijuana their depression was relieved not only for the duration of the "high" but for days after but this tapered off. I would say it helped them alot as I could see. I would never use mj while in a deep bout with depression though, this can lead to very bad situations.....seen that happen . But as a whole marijuana helps both of them signifigantly. One of these people happens to also be a medical marijuana patient (spinal cord injury) and has the same feeling about the health aspects of smoking too. So when I get the marijuana it goes straight to the pan to get cooked into butter. But there are pros and cons to everything. Although it will be healthier not smoking the marijuana, you will not be able to perfrom normal activities without the "high" feeling as you wish because eating marijuana can be more intense then smoking it.Maybee small doses of smoking can help you out and give you just what you need. Also keep in mind marijuana is a bronchial relaxant/ dilator so tars can exit your lungs easier than other smokes. Also holding the smoke in for less than 5 seconds can reduce dammage that could be caused to your lungs.Talking with someone you trust(seriously) is probably the most helpful thing anyone going through depression can do. good luck |

| Personally, I've found that smoking too much weed can lead to heavy depression, instead of curing it. The only real way to cure depression is to cure what's causing it. It isn't a disease, and certainly isn't caused by chemical imbalances. It's just a condition that's caused by bad circumstances in your life. So don't use any drug, including weed, to try and ease up your depression. Get a good psychiatrist.

| I agree with you WNB that smoking pot too much can cause depression 100% and drugs should not be used as an immediate relief from depression. But to say not to use any drug(pharmacological or not) to help treat depression is not correct. Without a stable state of mind how is a person able to address their issues? |

| I used to be really depressed to. People kept giving me problems. The one day I just said f*** you all and found some new freinds. And marijuana. It took me a while to get new good freinds, but they wanted to be my freind enough at first that they started talking to me and stuff. That's how I knew that they were for real. I don't know what your situation is or whatever, but I guess it will be alright. Find what is bothering you and eliminate it, or make it better. Good luck. ![]()

| WNB, your actually wrong. Depression is a chemical imbalance. And if your so against pharmas, why would I go to a psychiatrist for help? I think you mean a psychologist. They've actually already found the depression gene: http://www.healthnewsdigest.com/news...ession-38.html Lots of times these genes can get switched on from stressful situations in life. But once its on, there's no turning it off. Also they've done spect scans and found the depressed person's brain is faulty compared to a normal person's brain. http://www.brainplace.com/bp/atlas/ch7.asp Once they give this person medication, the brain returns to normal. Honestly, before you go about and say medications are bad, do your research. -Soar |

| I use it for depression, and my neck/back pain. It works real well, but don't smoke too much, because you develop a tolerance, and the high doesn't last as long. (You want the high to last long so that the effects are felt longer without having to smoke all the time) Out of ANYTHING that I've tried to make me feel good, marijuana is the only thing that really works.
