I honestly don't see how anyone can say that smoking weed before a certain age will make you crazy. It's a very generalized statement/assumption. There's no possible way that one can speak for everyone.

No one has said that. Yours is a classic "straw man" argument.

What the research showed is that boys who smoke heavily and frequently before they're 14 have a higher chance of developing a psychosis later in life. This might have something to do with all the marijuana they smoke. Or, perhaps, they smoke so much marijuana to help them deal with pre-psychotic mental problems. There's a correlation, but correlation is not causation.

I'm with you on the bolded part. I for one, first smoked pot 3 or 4 times when I was 14, but I didn't smoke quite a bit until I was 15. Now that I'm 16, I'm vaping every day, and I can't say I'm psychotic. It may be much too early to tell, but I'm almost 100% that I will never be psychotic.

Thumbs up

Wow! Very good point. This is true but something I have never considered in my own abuse of it as a teenager. Lightbulb moment for sure.

Thanks

My take is that if you are under 14 and a heavy, frequent cannabis user, you already have a screw loose somewhere, i.e. you do a lot of drugs because you're trying to cope with your mental health problems.

I wouldn't suggest the frequent or heavy use of any recreational drug by anyone under the age of 18, simply because the mind is still developing and we need to get our feet firmly planted in consensual reality before we start exploring the outlands with mind-altering substances.

Both rats and children need supervision. Without it there is no control in place over what they may or may not do. I just believe parental supervision is the key.

Marijuana makes you insane: Not proven

What is true, marijuana users are more likely to have mental disorders.

My moms friend was diagnosed with schizophrenia before she started smoking pot. Smoking is a way of self medication for the mentally ill

Care to provide any supporting evidence for this? I'm not necessarily doubting you, but IMO, this seems like a pretty far-fetched statement. Feel free to prove me wrong.

Based on my knowledge of neurology and psychiatry (which is extremely limited when compared with that of a scholar, but fairly impressive for a layperson), Buzzby's posts are spot-on.

Actually, the reverse is more true. Poeple with mental disorders are more likely to smoke weed, because, as you said, its a form of self-medication. However, the way you stated it, you make it seem as though marijuana causes the mental disorders, which simply isn't true in most cases. The disorder is likely to lead people to pot, rather than pot leading people to mental disorders.
