Hey, guys and girls, I have a question about auditory hallucinations. I am not much of a smoker but I have reason to believe that a friend of mine, who smokes 3-4 times a week, has been experiencing auditory hallucinations. How do I know? Well, it's very weird. Sometimes I would be in the same room with him talking and suddenly he would start mumbling something like he is talking to someone only he can hear. Now I have heard about auditory hallucinations but I don't know if people talk back to the voices they hear. And I am also bothered by the fact some of these episodes happen not immediately after he smokes but just kind of...during the regular times of the day... Basically, I am kind of worried that this is not just some interesting marijuana side effect but may be he has some mental problem. He doesn't act in any weird ways other than the occasional mumbling. I'm thinking, if he were schizophrenic or depressed or something else, there would be other sings, too... Has anyone had an experience with auditory hallucinations? Have you ever, when you were high, caught yourself talking back to something that isn't there? Any insight is appreciated. I don't smoke and have no idea what these things feel like do I have respect and tolerance for smokers.

Are you sure the only "drug" your friend is using is marijuana? Auditory hallucinations are not at all common with marijuana, i have never heard of any one having these. However, this is a common side effect of regular cocaine use.

I am pretty sure he is not using cocaine but he might occasionally be using ecstasy and acid (at parties).

I've never experienced this from weed and I highly doubt weed is the cause.

I've been reading around the internet about this, because im bored and this is what i found from wikipedia. "Auditory hallucinations, particularly of one or more talking voices, are particularly associated with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. and the presence may have significance in diagnosing these conditions, People not suffering from diagnosable mental illness may sometimes hear voices as well. The Hearing Voices Movement is a support and advocacy group for people who hallucinate voices, but do not otherwise show signs of mental illness or impairment. Other types of auditory hallucinations include musical hallucinations, where people will hear music playing in their mind, usually songs they are familiar with. This can be caused by lesions on the brain stem, occurring most often from strokes, but also tumors, sencephalitis, or abscesses. Recent reports have also mentioned that it is possible to get musical hallucinations from listening to music for long periods of time." This is also a pretty interesting article about the topic at hand that also helps to answer your question. www,livescience.com/health/060915_hearing_voices.html Basically that means that there could be nothing wrong with him, he just happens to hear voices. However, I dont believe that this problem is marijuana related, but i am no expert, i just read stuff on the internet alot. You might want him to see a doctor, or someone for a mental evaluation just to be sure.

| This sounds more like a schizophrenia issue than a marijuana issue. When I'm high, I frequently interpret wind noises as music. If I hear people talking but can't make out what they're saying, I make up a story line to go along with the voices. I always know what's going on and would never think of answering.

I have heard them before, but usually when experiencing an anxiety/paranoia attack while high. Usually if it's something you're really worried about, or preoccupied on, your mind will make it seem like it's really happening. For example both were when I was really worried I would get caught by my roomate. I heard the car drive up in the driveway a couple times, even though nothing was there. Altho it could have just been cars driving by and my mind made me think it was a car in our driveway. Or another time I was afraid I would get caught I smoked until I felt high, then I started to notice the loudness of my breath, and I was hoping they wouldn't hear me, so I think, I'm just being paranoid again (but still breathing quietly). I get up to walk back to my room and I can swear I hear my own breath, but amplified 10x on the wind, even though I am sure I am breathing quietly. And it sounds like it's coming from outside, someone mocking me. Well the wind was blowing hard that night, but pretty sure that was an auditory hallucination.
