| I was surprised when i heard my from my shrink that people that smoke pot around an hour or 2 bed before bed will (sorry if i am not phrasing this correctly), do not reach the REM stage of sleep. I would have thought quite the opposite, although its does make sense to me. But im still skeptical... Last edited by Tally-Ho : 02-07-2008 at 08:32 AM. |

| I find this hard to believe. I feel as if I sleep better when I have weed. I know LACK of weed can give me mild to moderate insomnioa if I've been smoking many days in a row. However, I haven't noticed any indication that smoking pot negatively affects my sleep patterns in any way. Of course, I'm sure the body becomes habituated to certain things, and sleeping while "high" may be one those things.

| Agree with TM, there was a time in my life when for over 6 months I had three jobs, two of them were very labor intensive. I did smoke cannabis daily during that time and believe me, if lack of REM sleep was really a side affect of cannabis use I wouldn't have lasted more than a couple weeks with the amount of work I was doing (with no real days off to speak of to boot). |

| I know I am having REM sleep, because I remember dreaming, and I vap daily, right up to the time I go to sleep. I don't believe this is true at all. Of course, he has no research to base his assessment, but I believe my personal experience shows it is not true.

| Well it may happen in some people, I can believe it. Many say they dream very vivid when they go to bed stoned, but I'm quite the opposite. I love remembering my dreams, and I remember at least 2 or 3 a night if I'm sober, but when I'm stoned I don't remember any of my dreams. I also feel much more fatigued in the morning if I'm stoned while I go to bed, but I just always contributed that to a burnout type effect. Losing some of my REM cycle would also explain that. I'll experiment a little with my next bag, see if my sleep is improved if I don't smoke right before bed.

| This CANNOT be true. I am one of those who smokes every night before I go to bed, and indeed, I do not wake up remembering my dreams at all. BUT, Im 99% sure that we would go insane if we didnt reach the REM stage. It is a necessary part of living, even though we arent completely sure as to why we dream.

| Well alcohol makes REM sleep unattainable, at least for the first few hours after you go to sleep, so alcoholics go through much of their sleep without REM. I don't see how it's so hard to think that pot could do the same. |

| I have a condition that causes me to get nothing but REM sleep unless I take special measures. Getting nothing but REM sleep is not very restful and contributes to a tendency to fall asleep suddenly at inappropriate times (narcolepsy). I find that smoking before bed does suppress REM sleep, which is what I want it to do. The doctor was half-right. The half he got wrong is that it only suppresses REM sleep for a couple of hours - until the high would normally wear off. This enables me to get at least one cycle of deep, restful sleep every night. There are other drugs that suppress REM sleep, but they are longer acting and leave me feeling "doped up" in the morning.

| It could be possible. There is research that taking anti-depressants could alter the time you spend in REM sleep or if you go into it at all. Maybe it is of the same concept/chemical affected in your brain? |

| ...it's one of the primary reasons I smoke weed. I might smoke an hour or so before bed, and that usually takes care of it! With it, I RARELY dream...and that's alright with me! Without it, I've kicked the wall and ended up with bloody toes in the morning...or simply woke up screaming at the top of my lungs! Thank goodness I have a tolerant wife...she's comforted me many times after a bad episode. ![]() Just as long as I keep my THC level up...I can sleep like a baby! ![]() |
