Default A morning's thought...

The San Francisco Chronicle has run a series of journalistic pieces these last few weeks re: marijuana.
Today's Opinion section contained a "letter to the editor" that yet, once again, drives the point home...

The great comfort of pot

Editor - Debra J. Saunders' column, "Hazy thinking on medical marijuana" (May 13) got it right.

"California has made it clear we want our doctors, not the federal government, to decide what is right for our sick friends and family members.

Quick story: My sweetheart died of cancer in 2002. I had known her for 15 years by then and she had never been a pothead. But as she told me one day, late in the progress of her disease, when it had debilitated her significantly, "I got two problems: I can't eat and I can't sleep. I take a toke and I get the munchies. After I eat, I take another toke and I get sleepy. Sometimes I fall asleep in my chair with a full stomach. You have no idea how good that feels."

Anyone who would deny this simple herbal remedy to those in their final and most difficult struggle is the criminal, not those who use it, nor those who supply it."*

Sad thing is the story of this patient is far from anything new, yet the government ignores the problem, thinking that these patients are just a bunch of potheads looking for an excuse to get high..
We base our lives around science and yet we defy it on this subject because our country is run by a bunch of stubborn money grubbers not even wanting to do the research in fear of losing money and fear of looking like a jackass for years.
But I think there will be big changes in the near future, within the next couple years or so. More states are trying to get it every year and the federal government can't hold their ground on this subject forever, especially the more states legalize MMJ.

Exactly.
It's astounding how far we've come since the '60's. And it's also extraordinary how many younger folk don't realize how radically things have changed.
I talk to so many people under the age of 30 who are flabbergasted when I tell them stories of how it really was, on a day to day basis, back then.
The paranoia and repression of simple smoking or possession of even minute amounts of weed was horrific.
Today, in most places it's no more than a

All those baby steps have taken us right to the doorstep of relief from this absurd prohibition...

I agree totally. And as marijuana get more and more acceptable, the more people will come out of hiding and protest against the prohibition, thus speeding the process. I predict that at least two more countries will legalize marijuana in the next few years, and by December 22 2012 Marijuana will be legal to cultivate, sell and use, either through legalization or by the end of the world as we know it.
