|  About babies My Mom works in NICU at a hospital she is a Register Nurse. Lately a lot of babies have been born with the intestines, and other internal organs outside the body. The general conclusion by Doctors, and everyone alike was cocaine abuse. Cocaine has become more and more of a problem around here lately. Now apprently they have been spreading news that this infact my not be cocaine abuse as originally thought, but marijuana useage. When she said this I couldn't believe it, I told her they must be wrong, without trying to make the fact I do it too obvious either. I don't know of any evidence that supports this, but the fact it was being spread around the hosiptal would make me believe this is being spread everywhere. If it is infact true then fine, but I just haven't heard of this before, and I think we all get pretty sensitive when marijuana is falsely accussed. |

| This sounds like a bit of Reefer Madness™ to me. I follow the news about marijuana pretty closely and I've never heard about this. I've known a lot of people over the years who smoke and have children. None of the children or, now, grandchildren have had birth defects. | Well, the notion that cocaine metabolites cause this birth defect borders on pseudo-science. Cocaine metabolites do affect mental maturation in newborns and will cause low birth weights. Cannabis has not be observed to be a teratogen; however, other chemicals such as secondary smoke, exhaust fumes, solvent fumes, etc..are indeed teratogens. Even 'stress' is a teratogen.
