It's been a tradition that we have always gone to the new Star Trek movies on opening day/weekend, and this is no exception. We started back in 1977 with Star Trek The Motion Picture.

We already have tickets to see it in IMAX on Saturday afternoon.

Vicki, that's awesome. I love traditions like that.

I've seen all the original Star Trek films (excepting The Next Generation films), so I definitely plan on catching this one. The previews are pretty bad ass and it's getting a lot of rave reviews.

I knew that was going to happen. I am going into this with an open mind. The stuff that is not cannon (the mistakes) will bother the hell out of me. Chalk it up to Star Trek screw up's, they are good for that. For example, the Enterprise was built in orbit of the Earth, not on the ground.

That was one of the first things I noticed in the trailer. I think I too am goin into this one with the mindset that it will just be a good movie, but not really in line with the other films. I'm looking at this more as the pilot to a remake of the whole series. (It would be cool if it was!)

I just saw it and it was pretty kick-ass. The very beginning was really corny and stupid but once you see kirk + co. in adult form it's awesome. The fight scenes were great and the story was pretty cool. Also I loved how it set it up for a sequel.

Default 11 things about Star Trek that made us go WTF?

**Yup, they are picking this apart like a buzzard on roadkill......

11 things about Star Trek that made us go 'WTF?' | SCI FI Wire

We love J.J. Abrams' new Star Trek and reservedly recommend it to all, including longtime fans, those who've never heard of Star Trek, and everyone in between. Call it a reboot, a re-imagining, a crime against canon—we're in, and we're ready for Star Trek 2.

That said, there were more than a few moments in the new film that left us shaking our heads and wondering, "What was J.J. thinking?" After conferring with a bunch of people who've seen the film too, we compiled a list of the 11 most egregious problems with the movie, which opened in theaters today. (Big spoilers ahead if you haven't seen the movie!)

11. Kirk's clown hands. Did we really need that?

10. Letting Willy Wonka design the engine room.

9. That whole plot point about how using the planetary drill thing (suspended improbably by what looks like a mega-huge strand of barbed wire) conveniently disrupts transporter beams and communication.

8. Mining ships of the future have enough weaponry to destroy a Starfleet armada. What exactly are they mining? (Yes, we know there is an explanation for this in the prequel comic, but if you need to read the comic to explain the movie, that's a problem. Would explaining it to the movie audience have been that difficult?)

7. Uhura casually tells her roommate that she translated a mysterious message detailing the destruction of a Klingon fleet by a large, Romulan ship, but fails to inform her captain until he's about to fly into a trap.

6. If he's getting so much action, why can't one of Spock's emotions be, you know, kinda happy? Why so dour, my Vulcan friend?

5. Rowdy officers must be jettisoned off the ship in life pods and left on ice planets. Apparently the brig was broken?

4. It's OK, though, because if you do that, the person in the life pod will manage to land right next to THE ONLY OTHER PERSON ON THE PLANET who has also been stranded there.

3. The bridge is the best place to bring suspected saboteurs. OK, this is actually a time-honored Trek tradition. But still.

2. If you accidentally get sent back 25 more than 150 years in time, it's better to take revenge on the person who was unable to save your planet than to actually, you know, TRY TO SAVE YOUR PLANET!

1. The random Star Wars and Cloverfield-like monsters appearing for no particular reason.

I dunno, it seems like these are all kinda...stupid to get pissy about. I liked the movie, but I can explain some of these things. Yeah, I'm a nerd. My comments in the {} thingies. Spoilers below.

{Well, it it could be some sort of jamming device on the Narada. Not actually discussed, but the way Nero talked about it to Pike would suggest he was jamming transporters and communications from his ship.}

8. Mining ships of the future have enough weaponry to destroy a Starfleet armada. What exactly are they mining?
{Why would this need to be explained. The prequel comic doesn't even matter. Comic books are not cannon. The ship is from 100+ years AFTER the events of this movie. Something like 129 years, I think Spock Prime tells Jim. It stands to reason that that far in the future, even mining tools would be advanced enough that could be used as weapons 130 years+ prior.}

7. Uhura casually tells her roommate that she translated a mysterious message detailing the destruction of a Klingon fleet by a large, Romulan ship, but fails to inform her captain until he's about to fly into a trap.
{Good try but, the message had nothing to do with a Romulan attack on Vulcan. In fact, it wasn't until Kirk put two and two together that they connected the dots and realized Vulcan was under attack.}

6. If he's getting so much action, why can't one of Spock's emotions be, you know, kinda happy? Why so dour, my Vulcan friend?
{Vulcans tend to keep all their emotions in check. It's not being dour, it's being in controll. When his homeworld was taken out...well that's a bigger deal than getting a bit of tail, isn't it?}

4. It's OK, though, because if you do that, the person in the life pod will manage to land right next to THE ONLY OTHER PERSON ON THE PLANET who has also been stranded there.
{Coincidence? Spock Prime didn't know Kirk was going to be there. Spock was only there cos he'd die there, and it would be a great seat to watch Vulcan go BOOM}

2. If you accidentally get sent back 25 more than 150 years in time, it's better to take revenge on the person who was unable to save your planet than to actually, you know, TRY TO SAVE YOUR PLANET!
{He lost not only his wife and son, but also his entire homeworld. Because an OFF-WORLDER failed to save it. The grief drove him mad, plus he's Romulan, who are Vulcans minus the emotional training. Romulans let their emotions controll them, to hell with the consequences.}

1. The random Star Wars and Cloverfield-like monsters appearing for no particular reason.
{What Star Wars monsters? Besides, until this movie, we've never really seen a lot of aliens. Mostly a lot of PRE-ESTABLISHED aliens. The United Federation of Planets is very big, it stands to reason that there'd be a shit ton of aliens that don't look like "Star Trek aliens". Hell, one would think y'all would be GLAD to see a wider variety of creatures!}
I can't argue with everything, so the things I can't argue with, I just took out. Ha ha ha. All in all it was a great movie, and considering that THIS is what people complain about, well...I'd say that's a pretty good movie. And keep in mind, I'm a huge Star Trek fan. TOS all the way (that coupled with my short stature is what gives me the MiniKirk moniker). And guys, just see it. You won't regret it.
