I have never really been able to see the enjoyment that other people do when they watch Anime. I simply see it as 'sketchy cartoons with big eyes.' I realize that opinion is incredibly crude so I was wondering if anyone had a video I could watch that may interest someone who is not into anime. I do NOT want to get into anime and watch it on tv and whatnot but I would like to broaden my horizons, so to speak.

Princess Mononoke is my all time fave (and the first one I ever watched)
Samurai Champloo is my favorite series.

Alright, thank you. I will try to search for a small clip of it or something. I am not trying to go in with a set mind already but I have glimpsed anime that my brother has on the tv and it just seems plain boring. Like a waste of airtime in my opinion. But I'll have to erase that slate in my head.....here it goes.

I do have to say, there is a lot of bad anime out there, and most of it is whats on mainstream tv, it gets better when it gets more indie..The problem is, a lot of anime is geared towards children lately, which makes it infinitely more outrageous and stupid. Princess Mononoke is an older anime, it was published in 1997, before anime became more mainstream...its basically about mans urge to desolate the planet, for the purpose of greed.

I'd like to contest that remark by citing a very large amount of series that have been released this year geared towards a much more mature audience such as Death Note, Red Garden and others. Second point that I'd make is the spring and summer releases this year in Japan. Yes, most of them were aimed at a teenage or adult market; Vampire Knight for the teen market but I'm finding that there are quite a few adults who would get a huge kick out of it and Kurenai for the adult market. Not great examples of anime themselves but just examples to note the difference.

Adult Swim is doing a better job of getting some more adult titles on. Shin Chan counts even if the dub track was rewritten, Super Milk Chan did it as well (it's arguable who did it better). Code Geass will be airing soon and the wildly popular Gurren Lagann will be airing on Sci Fi within the next few weeks.

When you say, "before anime became more mainstream" do you mean in Japan or in the US?

Thats great to know, I actually haven't had cable in the past year, so my point of view is slightly out of date, I mostly just rent or buy dvd's lately...I meant in the US, anime has really only gotten popular in the us in the last decade with the addition of adult swim, and movies like Princess Mononoke.
