| The Simpsons also portray the American family as lazy, overeating and plain out dumb. There is no PC (political correctness) in the Simpsons, aside from Lisa.

| http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_562384.html Brazilian city may sue The Simpsons Rio de Janeiro is threatening to sue the makers of The Simpsons over an episode it says paints the city in a bad light. Blame it on Lisa was broadcast in America last week. It shows Lisa befriending a Brazilian street boy called Ronaldo, Bart being swallowed by a giant snake near the Sugar Loaf Mountain, and rats stopping people crossing the road. Homer is kidnapped by a cab driver and when Marge goes to report the incident she is sexually harassed by a policeman. The city's tourism director, Jose Eduardo Guinle, told Estado de SP newspaper that $6 billion had been spent in the last four years trying to change people's image of Brazil. He said he has already contacted an international law firm about taking on the case. He said: "This cartoon is aggressively bringing back something that was already forgotten. In the 1950s, people believed there were crocodiles in the streets of Rio." He added that last year alone 220,000 Americans visited Rio. |

| I knew this was going to upset more people than me, its been on all newspapers, everybody is talking about it. Even the president mentioned it. I dont think its fair to sue simpsons coz that goes against my ethics(i cant find a better word) in my "what the hell" thread, where sueing people just for the money isnt really fair. I dont think this law suit is going anywhere, simpson might make an apologie and that will be it.

| I don't think Fox should apologize and I don't think anyone should sue. This is a cartoon we are talking about. A cartoon! This wasn't the news or a documentary. This was a cartoon meant to entertain. Quote:
I think we can look to Hustler Magazine, Inc. et al. v. Jerry Falwell for a precedent. Although that situation was about a single person, I think it still holds up for a whole country. | |

| When homer askes for the sweetest drink with the fruits, on the stand has Guaranį, i dont know how many of you tryed this stuff, its 10x better than coca-cola, and i didnt really get the joke why he eats dirt... and the airport sign reads "Aeroport DE Galećo" the right way would be Aeroporto DO Galećo, just a little grammar tip for Greoning ![]() and its not CarnIval its CarnAval and if you want to see the real "tele-boobies" look for Xuxa, Carla Perez, Sheila Mello, Sheila Carvalho, Tiazinha and Feiticeira. the last 2 are the worst (better looking, but more pornographic) |

| Help me out! Since you've lived in both countries at one time or another, what would you say about this: Could you list five things that are,in your opinion, the biggest cultural differances between the two countries? I know this is dumb, but I see S A as a land of horses and burro's.Enlighten me,please. ![]()

| okay man. I'll give brief history lesson. Brazil was discovered in 1500, for about 30 years Brazil was left alone by Portugal that was too busy with the Indies selling spices and silk to europe. But around 1530 some people found out that a tree in Brazil could be used to dye that silk. So for about 70 years all Portugal did is come here, give mirrors to the indians and get the wood, nothing else. Brazil has always been a exploration colony, diferent from america. The 1st americans came beacuse they were kicked out of england, so they had to live there, not just explore and go away. After the wood, came sugar cane, sugar was very rare in europe and portugueses had farms here to plant sugar cane to sell to Holland and they would refine it and sell to the rest of europe. After the sugar cane the most profitable business was selling slaves. that went on for another 100 years. Then after a short period gold was found. For the next 150 years or so gold was explored and taken to the kings in portugal, almost none was left here(the population increased in 900% in just 100 years). One of the main reason that england is such a power country today is that almost every single gold coin just passed thru portugal and went right into england, both countries signed a treaty, Portugal would buy cloth from england and england would buy wine from portugal, a total rip off bacause england would buy one bottle of wine and sell a ton of wool/cloth to portugal. this went on for a while Brazil one became a "nation", when the royal family had to run away from napoleon bacause it was braking the continental barrier(France said nobody could do business with england, but england said you keep your word, the cloth/wine treaty, and will protect you.) Anyways england didnt really help, and the franch attack portugal and the royal family came Brazil wasnt allowed to have banks, colleges or do comerce with other country beisedes portugal and england. So when the royal family came all that fell apart. While this happen America was already an independent country, this was circa 1800. America was already a baby country fighting its own internal battles, but it was already one nation. Brazillians were inspired with the way america had broken free of the metropolis and wanted to do the same, the nationalist ideias were running around the coutry like crazy, battles every where. Till the Don Pedro (the king) couldnt hanlde it anymore and resinged. His son D. Pedro II was only five so he couldnt be king, so after he turned 18 in 1822 he proclameted the independence (september 7th). After that coffee was the big thing...but to your question now ![]() Religion: America is pretty much a protestant country, Brazil on the other hand was and still is beaten by the catholic curch, people here are religious as you can get. Every month there is one or two holydays devoted to saints of some sort. Brazil is one of the countries that has the most holydays (woohoo!) People: Race mixing here is nothing like there, there are soooo many "variations", whites, blacks, indians, and every possible mix. In the early 1900's europeans from every country came and those mixed too. When i lived there i could that, this kinda of thing didnt happen there very often, racism here is almost none. Only some white right fanatics are racist, besides that zilch, zippo, nada! CarnAval: What was on the simpsons, its this huge ass "party". The whole country stops for 4 days in a row to party. Topless women dancing on floats and samba music till you cant stand it. It happens 40 days before easter (see the influence of the church), altho now the church condems it, bacause of the sexual nature of the thing. Educational system: Schools starts here 7.15am and stops at 12.30, we dont have lockers, schools here dont support sports as much as it does there, there are some city-wide championships, but nothing like state champions or anything like that. The ideia of popular got here recently with the american culture from movies and tv shows. Since there are no cheerleaders here, there are no popular girls that want to became home coming queen, also anothe inexistent thing. There is only one prom, and its when you finish high school no king or queen of the year and it doesnt have a theme. Cities: As a rule of thumb, the largest city of the state here is the states capital. This doesnt happen there. My city is the 2nd most important city in my state and its has 600,000 people the capital: Curitiba has a little over one million. The largest city altho is not the capital of the coutry. Sćo Paulo is the largest with about 18 million people, Brasilia is the capital with about 8-9 million. And cities here tend to grow up wards, building like a mofo, im going to post a pic of my city sky line, i bet there arent no cities in US with 600,000 that has this same amount of buildings. I guess this is pretty much it i guess, if any of you people got any questions just ask me. This post was pretty long....im tired now. |

| youre right. the simpsons ARE infuriatingly unrealistic. who has skin that shade of yellow? seriously though. look at the episode where they went to australia. when that guy went to check if his neighbors water went down the drain "backwards", the neighbor was miles away. and yes, australia WAS originally colonized by brititsh prisoners due to the overcrowding england had at the time, and yes, the prisoners who went to australia WERE the worst of the worst, but that doesnt mean that all australians are crooks, or even that most of them are. was there any australian cities that sued fox? no. was there any australians who got mad at that episode? im sure there was. same thing goes with the episodes where they went to canada, new york (granted, its still the same country, ut its a different culture), i think there was one where they went to japan........... its a fictional show. not only that, but its a cartoon. not only THAT, but its on fox. whenever they do something like this and make fun of a culture, theyre doing it as a joke, its in fun. nobody gets mad at south park when cartman insults hippies........... |
