| I've read Lord of the Rings, and it seemed weird to me then. Then I saw the film at the cinemas, and one slightly elusive factor of the book was plastered across on massive, wide screen. At the beginning, Gandalf is sitting with Frodo smoking from a pipe. Smoking what though? Frodo enlightens us: "Finest weed in the West Farthing," he says. And it most certainly is some genuinely good sh1t, after all, Frodo does manage to somehow perceive in his un-invigoratingly blazed conciousness, that gandalf is not blowing smoke rings, but is in fact, blowing one seriously complex ship. Wow. My second point is that, later on in the book (not certain whether it was in the film), the hobbits go shroom-picking. Hmmm...Could it be that J.R.R Tolkien was a stoner. I leave you to decide... |

| i read all the books in a matter of weeks because i thought they were really good. hehe, in the last one, return of the king, the hobbits jump some of sauroman's guards and steal their weed because it's some of the best in the land.

| It would seem that the "Pipe weed" as they refer to it so often is pot but I clearly remember one line where it's referred to as tobacco. And it makes perfect sense, J.R.R. smoked tobacco and the books were finished in 1948 far too early for him to know what weed was. Still, it would be pretty groovy if it was pot.

| Actually i can answer a few of these questions quite seriously, as a friend of mine worked on the film, and I got all the inside dirt on this. Both the Director and Sir Ian McKellen are users of marijuana, not full-on users but apparantly after each day, Ian could be found toking up There is also a line in the movie meant to basically tell people what the "weed" is....... "Your love of the halfling's leaf has clearly slowed your mind" Now what herb that we all know and love can have that effect? Basically in the books it was never completely mentioned what it was, but in the movie they decided to tell the viewers thier opinions ![]() Hope that helped out.

| Yeah, there's one shot where the entire screen is just a big pipe bowl glowing red as gandalf inhales. When you'r making a big movie, you don't just throw in lines like "this is the finest weed in the shire" without realizing how they can be percieved. As far as J.R.R. Tolkien smoking weed, 1948 is certainly not too early for him to know about weed. I do think it's unlikely that he smoked pot, but it has always been common for writers to experiment with mind-altering substances for inspiration. Poets used to drink absinthe. And then there's Aldous Huxley (I think that's how it's spelled, author of Brave New World who went on to experiment with acid. PS - Someday I want to open a head shop and book store called "J.R.R. Tokin's Pipe Weed Emporium" |

| I agree with the fact that the director may have made it look like pot in the movie but I know for a fact that J.R.R. called the pipe weed tobacco in one of the sentences (trust me, I was looking for references). Remember, this is 1948 in Great Britain, I highly doubt they had pot there at that time. I don't think J.R.R. was referring to pot when he wrote about pipe-weed. Who knows, that's just my opinion. |

| Pipe weed is refered to as coming from the family "nicotania" i think that clearly points to what it is. |
