| Forget the crappy movie by the same name with Leonardo diCaprio. The Beach, in a nutshell, is the story of a backpacker in Southeast Asia who finds an island paradise, fringed with marijuana fields. I recently read it again and would highly recommend it to all. |

| I don't think so Tuco. I think you are going to dig me up a copy. You see, in this world there's two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig. Is there a thread about movie quotes?

| "The Beach" is a great read that brings quite a bit more to the table than just an adventure story. For those that haven't seen the movie, here's a quick nutshell of the plot: Travelling (as opposed to being a tourist) in Thailand, Richard is given a map by a mysterious, seemingly insane neighbor in a boarding house they are staying at. The map leads him to a secluded beach on an island where to his surprise he finds a community of like-minded travellers who have sought a sort of refuge from civilisation and the mainstream tourist industry that is overtaking Thailand. Everything is great... for a while.... Some reviews have called the book a modern day take on "The Lord of the Flies" which probably isn't too far afield. What happens when innocence and paradise is corrupted? Garland's characters are all pretty believable and he has a deft touch with emotion. He is able to create really complex relationships between characters while the plot pushes forward. Damn good read for the summer, grab it at the library or used book store. -LM

| Ironically enough, I've read some reviews that suggest that Garland is opposed to the counterculture. 28 Days Later begins with animal rights activists releasing a virus, and even The Beach devolves into complete chaos.
