| *sigh* I want to like this movie so much. Brad Pitt is such a tallented actor, so are the rest of cast. However, as a student of history all I can do when I watch movies like Gladiator, Troy, Braveheart is pick the details appart. I'm so used to documentaries (which fascinate me) that hollywood just seems so over the top and fake. The real deal to me is much, much more interesting. I've been ruined!

| Yeah at first I was getting pissed at the changes and inaccuracies at the start of the movie. Then I reminded myself to just enjoy it and I did. Nice fresh take on the whole battle for troy thing. |

| Yeah i've had to force myself to just "enjoy" movies recently. If you just forget about the rules of physics and everything sane and normal--hollywood blockbusters are so much fun! But since were on the topic of Troy, I'd like to interject that much detailed research has gone into the details of Homer's story. It seems that in fact much if not nearly all of the major details COULD have been real. There were a series of really great documentaries on Discovery which also featured clips from the movie and interviews with the actors. The fight scene between Achillies and Hector looks dope--up there with the Darth Maul fight from EP:1 and the final fight between Maxiums and the Emperor in Gladiator. One thing that I was surprised about is that the makers of the movie actually DID try really hard to re-create the bronze-era weaponry. Some of those massive battle scenes had me wondering...where was the city at? Oh I see the walls and such, but that is known as the "Citadel" not the actual city...the city would have been all around the outter walls. If you watch that made-for-TV special called, "Hellen of Troy" you'll see that the Greeks first went and burned/sacked/pillaged the marketplace and such outside the gates first. Also, there seemed to be way, way to many fighters on the battle field...Troy could only garrison about 6,000 soldiers (high estimate) and the Greeks probably only sent a fraction more. |

| Yeah, I also forced myself to enjoy it, and then I liked it ![]() The fight scenes were entertaining, and the plot (when you forget it is supposed to be historical) wasn't bad. Of course, I kept laughing at Helen of Troy (as hot as she was), because at the time, the only blondes in Greece were prostitutes.

| I just saw this movie... First and foremost, historians pretty much agree that there WAS a Troy, and that it was sacked/burned. Some things about the movie that bothered me: -city walls were much to tall. I belive they were actually like 16 feet tall. Also, to fit the horse into the city, Homer says the Trojans had to take appart the gate because it was to tall. This never happened in the movie -distance to ocean. The real location of Troy is about 5-7 miles away from the ocean, so I doubt that the Trojans could have seen the ocean from the 16 foot walltops -Spartan life....the spartans were everything BUT the ones portrayed in the film. I don't know if because this was because this pre-dates what we consider "spartan life". Spartans were almost communist, very xenephobic, and were generally considered to be the best soldiers in the Agean. They practiced eugenics, culling the weak babies and anyone with "defects". Spartan men and women also lived separatley. There's a story about how a Spartan boy stole an animal and rather than be found stealing, the boy died from the animal eating him alive under his shirt. Talk about hardcore...basically, they were the Delta Force of the anchient world. -number of soldiers...Ok, most historians will agree that if the battle for Troy happened like Homer said, the Greek army would have been more like 5-6,000...not 50,000 men. -The city walls again...the city was not "all emcompased" by the walls. Most of the city where the bulk of the population lived was OUTSIDE the walls. Only the Citadel, temples, barracks, and that sort of thing was walled in. The Greeks would have plundered, raped and pillaged the outlying city for food and materials. -Time...This was more "a weekend at Troy" rather than the 10-year battle that Homer depicts in his writings... Overall, for all it's innacuracies it was fairly fun to watch. A little slow at times, but the battles made up for it. |
