Default Full House: Living La Vie Boheme?

First off let me say Full House was a horrrendously unfunny "Family Friendly" television show with no redeeming social or enertainment value what so ever. Quite simply the show was a piece of garbage. But having siad that I should also state that I've have seen almost every episode, a majority more then once. Now perhaps I'm just baked, thus given to over-anlayzation, but if you take certian elements out of the context of the cliched plotlines and look at things from a slightly swerved perspective a new picture begins to take shape. One of the Tanner 'Family' living a bohemian like exixstance;I'll abiet a rather lame one.
The show takes place in San Fransico which has long acted as sort of quasi-capital for Bohemian America. With a large and vocal community of homosexuals, hippies, artist, freaks, and a various other assortment of peoples living somewhat out of step with mainstream american culture;San Fransico has become a place where the lunatics are running the asylum so to speak.
Now if you had never heard of the show and I gave you any no more information other then the series details three unrelated grown men trying to raise a family in San Fransico,it wouldn't an unreasonable to assume that the 3 male leads were homosexual. By carefully selecting what details I gave you I could paint a picture of a completly different show.
For instance if I told you about Joey, a performance artist/comedian,who resides in his college buddie's basement without paying rent, has a juvenile sense of humor and a proclivity for wearing loud Hawiian patterned shirts, it would be natural to assume he's a pothead, a realy big pothead. The fact that he never seems to have the need to score with chicks ( I can only remember about 3 times in the entire series where he activly attempts to persue a female) it would tend to suggest that there is another lady in his life named Marry Jane. Which is why I don't believe they ever show you Joey's room in the series, because of the collection of glass bongs and perhaps a small grow-op set up in the closet.
Then you have Uncle Jessie, another performance artist/musician, who has a hair fetish, an obsession with Elvis, and has a proclivity towards wearing leather (drives a motorcycle). He's the shows 'Rebel' who the audiance is suppose to find humor in watching him adjust to the life of the "family man". He does score with chicks and even marries and has two kids of his own, but the fact that he has more vest then any straight man would ever own makes would suggest that he is possibly bi. The image of him cruisin' the streets of Frisco decked out in leather on his bike listening to 'Love Me Tender'invokes a rather gay vibe. Basicly a failure as musician, except for having a hit single in Japan, he in typical bohemian fashion tries to incorperate his artistic love into his chosen career fields i.e. (gay?)nightclub owner and the advertising company he starts with Joey. He even bemoans 'selling out' when he plays piano for Joey's children show.
Then you have the patriarch Danny, a freaklishly square individual with a mental disorder (OCD), he beleives in the communal raising of children and appearts to have no problem with his brother-inlaw and friend residing in his house rent free for several years, which seems odd to me because I personally dislike my brother-inlaw and having a friend crash at my place got old after about a month. His mental disorder and his fear of commitment with the only woman he dates after his wife death could possibly be caused by repressed homosexuality. I could see him recieving sexual favors from Joey in exchange for letting him live their.
The only other character of any real note would be Kimberly Gifford who is obviously a lesbian. She's a social outcast with smelly feet who's only friend is the horse faced Candace Cameron. She was the star of a "Very special episod of Full House" where she acts out her resentment at being a social outcast by self-medicating and getting really smashed at a party. Substance abuse could be a possible problem in her future. I see her becoming a militant butch lesbian in college, perhaps at UC Berkley, and perhaps having a sexual encounter were D.J. or Stephane.
So yes, intentional or not, a case can be made for "Full House" being secretly being counter culture television with a sachrince coating meant to disguise the bohemian undercurrent of the show. The show is still gay, but can now be seen as gay on a hole new level. Anyway peace

I'm confused. You claim to have seen every episode, yet you seem to have forgotten many important details from the series.

I, on the other hand, have definitely seen every single episode. Allow me to set you straight...

You say they were three "unrelated" men. Wrong. Jesse was Danny's wife's sister, thus making him the girl's uncle - Danny's brother in law.

Joey's room was shown on many occassions throughout the series. If you'll recall, Joey was planning on moving out when he felt there was no longer any room for him. The family surprised him by refinishing the garage as his bedroom. After that point, his room was shown many times. Don't you remember, Joey feeling a little down on himself, so Danny tells him they've moved his things to the garage which gets him even more upset. Then he goes downstairs and they surprise him with the new room. I also recall another episode when Joey had taken ill (I wanna say it was chicken pox but don't quote me on that) and they showed his room a lot.

Also, the three mens' pursuit of various women was an important part of much of the show. Danny spent much of his time worrying that it would hurt the girls if he dated, but once they gave him the ok, he went ahead and dated the girls' Honeybee troop leader before moving on to Stephanie's friend Gina's mom. He also dated Vicky, and was subsequently engaged to her. Unfortunately, her career in Chicago and his in San Francisco kept the two apart.

Jesse also dated quite extensively as he took on the role of the "bad boy" of the show. He once even tried to take Danny and Joey fishing out in the ocean with three women. You did get one thing right, he was eventually married to Rebecca and had two children while still living in Danny's house. He and Rebecca had planned to move out in the episode following their wedding, but he missed the girls and decided to move back. So he moved into the attic, while Joey moved into his old room and the basement was again refinished, but this time as a studio.

Joey also dated and usually ended up with some pretty quirky women. He dated a female comedian at one point in the show. He once also got engaged to a woman he had met just a day or two before, they both felt they had kind of clicked, so he proposed and she said yes before they both realised that they were going way too fast. Other than that, I don't recall him ever getting too serious, but he did date several different women.

As far as DJ's friend Kimmy being a lesbian... I see no evidence to support that idea. You'll recall she dated throughoutt much of the show, including once when she was with a guy who only had one or two words in his vocabulary, including the word "whatever." She also dated DJ's wealthy ex-boyfriend, Rich, but he had his heart set on DJ who subsequently turned him down... again.

I think you've overanalyzed much of the show and your preceding generalizations were completely unfounded. As far as Joey smoking weed, Danny's proclivity toward performing sexual favors for Joey, or Kimmy turning into a "militant butch lesbian," there's no evidence to support any of that. Sorry. It was an interesting opinion though.

I'm about to start arguing about a show I don't even like, but anyway.

Firstly they are three unrelated men, because Jessie is the Uncle to the children still does not make him related to Danny. So I'll stick by that statement.

You were right about them showing Joey's room as I do remember one episode where Jessie was crackin on the goofy toys (i.e. stoner toys) he had. Still doesn't mean his closet wasn't labbed up. He still rarely attempted to score with chicks, you only being able to bring up two instances in the shows entire run proves my point. He rarely attempted to get any play, thus my assumption that something else has to be filling that void.

You seem to find no problem with my analysis of Jesse so will move on to Danny. Again doesn't often seek the attention of the opposite sex. He maintains only one serious relationship (i.e. Vicky, who would be only the 2nd reaccuring adult female lead of the show) and as you siad fails to fully commit to her.

As for Kimmy dating extensivly, are you serious? She was a social outcast who everyone hated, that was her character arch-type, the annoying neighbor. There may have been a few instances where they intoduced some poor schmo as her boyfriend, but that's becuase the writers couldn't continuely make her the 3rd wheel in D.J. and Steve's relationship. But dating extensivly no I don't remember it.

That was kind of the point. I wasn't making a case for my analysis being the actual "reality" of the show. I was just saying certain elements if taken out of the context of the show can present a not so "family friendly" undercurrent.

Though I will have to give you props, you have watched a lot of Full House.

Man, I hate Bob Saget. He is the worst comedian ever. On the old Funniest Home VIdeo he would say the dumbest jokes and the audience would laghf so hard at him. I really cant stand him.

It disturbs me that you've watched "every episode" but claim it to be "horrendously unfunny."

I used to smoke after school then go watch full house. The show was a lot better that way.

Hmmmm....i'm a stoner, i don't collect action figures, and people think I'm funny. Blows that theory out of the water, now doesn't it?

Seriously though, the whole premise of this thread is bunk. there is no basis for any of S&M's conclusions or observations. Its simply an attempt at making an interesting discussion about an uninteresting show (that i watched a LOT growing up). Granted, it went further than most discussions about an ancient, lame show would go, but that doesn't mean there's anything to his theories. Its a lame, family orintated show, nothing more, nothing less. No hidden meanings, no "secret lives". In reality, you could come up with secret, underlying meanings or themes for any sitcom....if you were so inclined

Ok, let's just forget reality and continue this discussion, because it rocks. I have some input to input.

Here's what I think:

Joey is not gay, but he is a loser and probably a pothead. He just can't get laid, cause he's so quirky, not really a ladies man. Sure, ladies love a guy with a sense of humor, but oh yeah, he's not funny at all, and I don't think ladies could really get turned on by his Popeye impression. And he's disgusting, he looks like a caveman. But not gay. Oh, and he might have fooled around with Kimmy Gibler (not Gibbons).

Uncle Jesse was one of the pioneers of metrosexuality. Sure, the Fonze's hair was always perfect, but I don't know, Jesse Katsopolis' hair obsession just sort of seemed more bi. And the guy just seems gay sometimes. I'm going to say maybe bi, although perhaps has never acted on it. Might have also fooled around with Kimmy when he was drunk one night and she stayed over.

Ol Danny boy, that square archetype of the cleancut OCD dad of the 80s and early 90s, before they all became fat stupid oafs. The man said it himself, he sucked dick for off-topics. Really, I like to assume that that is Danny Tanner in Half Baked. He just went downhill, it happens.

The Katsopolis twins are gay.

Kimmy is bi.

Stephanie is a boy crazy slut.

DJ is just normal, probably the most normal person on the show, though also the most hated by me for that reason. Her longtime boyfriend Steve is definitely gay.

Rebecca is straight, but fooled around in college.

And finally Michelle. She ended up being a slut. Not really bi, but she still fools around with girls all the time.
