Well, MTV went on the air in 1981. It was cool fro 10 years or so, then they started with bullshit nonsensical programming. So yeah, it was probably before your time.

God, I'm feeling very old all of a sudden.

You know what else we can thank MTV for? The birth of reality television.

I used to watch MTV years ago. I was living at home and going to school. This was right at the start of its conversion to trash. I remember MTV used to show music videos during off-peak hours, generally just used as filler because MTV wasn't making the mucho dinero it makes now, so it couldn't really afford to have the constant production monitoring it does now. Then this little show called The Real World made its debut in 1992. The alpha of the omega.

I remember when MTV used to play music videos 24/7. I, too, am 20 and I remember when I was little my mom would watch it; she would have been about 25 at the time. Actually, I think seeing the video for Madonna's "Like a Prayer" everyday is what made me gay.

I liked MTV best in the mid to late 90s, when they had good shows like Beavis and Butt-head, the Head, Aeon Flux and Daria. Ah, the good old days.
