| I joined this website this past April, took a rather long hiatus from pot, or any other recreational drug for that matter, for several months, and here we are, in September, in the music section where I first made my appearance on this website. I am here, not to tell my story (however long and boring), but to, first of all, inquire: have any of you heard of a band called Clutch? If not, you have to listen to them. Seriously, I don't care if you only like country, or rap, or death metal, listen to Clutch. One of their slogans is "pro-rock," this could not be any more correct. The mere face that they can pull off cover versions of blues classics, such as "Electric Worry" and "Gravel Road," alas they even pulled off "Who's Been Talking?." Clutch has had several musical styles. They started with their first full album "Transnational Speedway League: Anthems, Anecdotes & Undeniable Truths" which was genre defining (I don't know if that means anything, I just hear it a lot, in other words, it was great). The first three songs tie together perfectly; "A Shogun Named Marcus" "El Jefe Speaks" and "Binge and Purge." They have sort of a comical anger about them. The first lines of the entire album are: "If you thought it was boring in Jordan Then come out here for a day And by the way, the name is Marcus But if you like, you can call me Sense" The tone at which Neil Fallon delivers these lines sound angry, but there is no anger in the lyrics. Track one and two show no anger, but rather intensity, track three is pure anger, it is one of the only times that anger is shown in an otherwise mellow band. Their second album, "Clutch" (self titled), has a song which was featured on the movie Haggard. On this album there are no angry songs, but they sing about a plethora of topics, ranging from their popular theme of the Apocalypse, to the discovery of the corpse of John Wilkes Booth. After the release of the self titled album the released "Elephant Riders" which was a completely new type of rock similar to CKY. Jam Room was the same way. The 2001 release of "Pure Rock Fury" brought some great titles such as "Red Horse Rainbow" "The Great Outdoors!" and "Drink to the Dead." "Pure Rock Fury" was one of their worst albums ever released, but still one of the best albums in rock's history. "Blast Tyrant" is probably the most recognizable album, it has the song "The Mob Goes Wild" on it. The music video for this track was produced by Bam Margera and starred Ryan Dunn. "Robot Hive/Exodus" was the first sample of "modern Clutch" that was released. Modern Clutch is some of, in my humble opinion, some of the best Clutch. They bring great lyrics with deeper meanings. The song "10001110101" is not about computer programing and binary code as most believe, but it is interpreted (by myself and some of my closest friends, the artistic ones, not the beer 24/7 ones, in other words, the good friends) as a story of a man-made apocalypse and the binary code 10001110101 is in fact a Russian nuclear weapon launch code. The most recent album "From Beale Street to Oblivion" takes Clutch back to not only their roots as New England natives, but to rock's roots in blues. If you have not heard of Clutch, they are a must, and they are even better (assuming that you can improve on perfection) when high, or live (or both). The second band you should listen to, if you have not already, is Interpol. They have a very mellow tune, if you want to just relax and listen to music then Interpol is the band for you. I have many great memories of driving around downtown Denver at 2 in the morning smoking cigars and listening to Interpol. Thankyou for your time, I apologize for making this post so wordy, but all my writing lately has been brief, such as memos. I need to get all my extra words out. |
