| I'm really just asking this out of curiousity since I've already made my decision. Does anyone think it's weird for guys to cover songs originally done by a girl singer/group? See, I sing at a bar every Friday night and I'd really like to do a cover of Sweet Ones by Sarah Slean. If I can get the band to play it, I think it will be a really fun song to do. The Beatles have covered a couple Shirelles songs, Aerosmith has covered the Shangri-Las, so I know it's been done before. I'm just curious to know if anyone thinks a guy covering girl songs is perfectly fine? A faux pas? The way I see it, the only problem with this is simply having to drop an octave to be able to hit the notes! Unless you're some sort of vocal superstar...which I'm not (but pretty damn close )

| I don't see any problem in it. Just because the singer of a song is male/female, doesn't mean the narrator of the song has to be the same. I myself am planning on learning some Joni Mitchell songs. And the ones I have in mind are about love, from a woman's perspective.

| Well.....it can't be anywhere near as strange as listening to Type O Negative ocver Britney Spears' "baby one more time" which I've actually heard!

| ^ Haha, yeah, that version is pretty funny.... I really like Type O's music, but this shit just makes me laugh.... But no. I don't think it's weird at all. Music doesn't have a gender. ![]()

| Thanks for the replies guys. I'm fully planning on doing the song my own way. I've made a few small changes to the song without completely re-arranging it. I can't watch the video right now, being on dial-up, but I've heard Dweezil Zappa's (Frank Zappa's son) version Hit Me Baby One More Time. Personally I thought it was fairly well done, but others might disagree! Hopefully after a few times of playing Sweet Ones we can turn it into something really solid. ![]() |
