best Festival I ever went to was easily the first Lollapalooza. All that followed were corporate ad fests populated by meathead jocks throwing mud but the first one was awesome!

Rollins Band opened
Butthole Surfers followed and played all of their songs with no breaks between so it sounded like one single, hour long song.
Ice-T came out and rapped, then Bodycount came out and rocked.
Nine Inch Nails did their thing (and sucked if I recall)
Living Colour were great
Siouxie and the Banshees cancelled.
Jane's Addiction ruled. They were at their peak and were never greater.

Outdoor fests pale in comparison to the overt coolness of the original Lollapalooza. Not only were the bands cool, but the people around were awesome. Before alternative went mainstream. Punks, goths, hippies, all together in one place. Becuase of that show, others have failed to impress me totally (I'm looking at you, Warped Tour).
